MATTHEW Broadbent has committed to Port Adelaide long-term having signed a four-year contract extension that will see him remain at Alberton until 2019.

Out of contract this year, Broadbent is one of the Power's most experienced players and until last week had played 80 consecutive games spanning back to 2011.

A second-place finish in the 2012 John Cahill Medal count signalled his ascendency to Port Adelaide's core group, with his damaging long-range kick often helping the Power get out of a squeeze.

The reliable rebounding defender grew up a Port supporter, his favourite player being one of the club's first AFL midfielders Josh Francou.

His grandfather was also the club's podiatrist in the SANFL from 1970 until 1996 and then in the AFL from 1997 until 2003.

To stay at the club his family has called home for the best part of 40 years is very important to the 24-year-old.

"The family has always been a part of this club since grandpa worked on the medical team, and I always loved the fact that I got to play for the club I grew up supporting, it's an easy decision to sign on," Broadbent told portadelaidefc.com.au.

"I've really enjoyed the last couple of years here especially, and feel my footy's been able to develop.

"Going forward I want to keep playing my role in the team consistently, it's something I'm really focussed on.

"I'll be 28 by the time my contract comes up again and the chance to be part of this really dedicated group of guys working together is great."

Broadbent's contract follows the recent signing of Jarman Impey.

“Broady has been a very consistent performer for a number of years now and we are very pleased that he’s committed to the club long term," Power coach Ken Hinkley told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“He’s demonstrated a great willing to learn and he continues to strive to make himself and the team better.”
