PORT ADELAIDE has taken Todd Marshall with its first pick in the 2016 AFL Draft.
The 18-year-old tall forward, compared to Justin Westhoff by AFL talent managers, was selected at No. 16 after academy bids by the GWS Giants and Gold Coast relegated the Power down the order from their original pick No. 14.
From near Deniliquin in New South Wales, he continues a string of Murray Bushrangers to make their way to the Power in recent years, with Dougal Howard (2014), Jarman Impey (2013), Tom Clurey (2012) all being taken from the Victoria-NSW borderlands.
Having previously played representative cricket for Australian underage teams, Marshall switched his focus to Australian football this year and impressed as a strong marking, agile forward.
He averaged 2.3 goals for NSW/ACT in the national under-18 championships and 1.8 goals for the Allies.
Earlier in the night, Essendon selected Sandringham Dragon Andrew McGrath with the prestigious first pick of the draft.
