DESPITE kicking five goals straight against Melbourne on Saturday night, Port Adelaide utility Paul Stewart remains open to playing any role that coach Matthew Primus gives him.
Stewart’s five goals backed up his four against Adelaide and sole major against Essendon - getting him to ten goals from three games and elevating him to third on the Power’s leading goal kicker tally.
Despite his purple patch down forward, Stewart says he is happy to continue playing as a key utility for the Power.
“It was good to get on the end of a few goals but I’m happy to play my role for the team - wherever Matty wants to play me,” Stewart told the media on Monday morning.
“It’s good to get on the end of a few goals.
“I don’t mind it down forward, but we’ve got Schulzy [Jay Schulz] coming back soon and hopefully John Butcher can get back in soon so if there’s a spot there for me down forward I’ll be happy to play there.”
Stewart, who recently re-signed with the Power, put the victory down to a four-quarter pressure effort from his teammates.
He said the team’s ability to tough out the game against the inhospitable Darwin humidity and Melbourne’s early-match ascendency was the key to victory.
“It’s a long trip for the boys [to Darwin],” said Stewart
“Our main target going into the game was to bring pressure and play four quarters of football.
“It was good to come away with a win.
“They [Melbourne] really brought it to us in the first 10-15 minutes of the game.
“At quarter time we got a good talking-to and had to start the second quarter again, bring that pressure and I think we did that.
“It’s a credit to the boys that we were able to come away with a win.”
Port Adelaide sits fourteenth on the ladder ahead of Sunday afternoon’s match against Fremantle at AAMI Stadium.
