YOUNG midfielders Hannah Ewings and Abbey Dowrick have both committed to Port Adelaide for a further two years, seeing them remain at Alberton until the end of 2024.

The skilful pair made history in Season 7, becoming the first players from the same club to rank first and second in the AFLW Rising Star vote, signifying a promising start to their senior football careers.

Ewings, the Rising Star winner, was also awarded the club’s best and fairest and best first year player in 2022.

Runner-up Rising Star Dowrick ranked third in the best and fairest count, behind only Ewings and experienced AFLW veteran Erin Phillips.

Whyalla product Ewings was South Australia’s number one draft pick last year and has since proven her worth with a thrilling first season in black, white and teal.

She played every game in Season 7, averaging 13.9 disposals and kicking four goals.

The 18-year-old ranked first in the side for average clearances, second for contested possessions and fourth for tackles.

Dowrick also had a statistically outstanding season, ranking second for average clearances and third for both contested possessions and tackles.

Signed from Subiaco in the WAFL, Port Adelaide list manager Naomi Maidment detected genuine natural football talent in Dowrick, after the 20-year-old was overlooked in two AFLW Drafts.

Dowrick also played all 10 minor round games, averaging 14.4 disposals and starting with a bang when she was nominated for the Rising Star award in Round 1.

Both players have the ability to turn games around, with Maidment expecting them to have a huge impact on-field in Seasons 8 and 9.

“Hannah and Abbey are both impressive players with true Port Adelaide traits,” Maidment said.

“We are really excited to watch them grow and develop over the next two years in our program. After what they showed in their first year at the top level, it’s really exciting to think about where they will be in a few years’ time.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have them both extend their stay with our club. The Port Adelaide fans love watching them play and I know they will get behind them again this year.”

The AFLW sign and trade period opened on Friday and will close on Monday, March 20 at 3pm AEDT.
