HARD-NUT midfielder Nick Moore has been awarded the A.R. McLean Medal as Port Adelaide’s best and fairest in the SANFL for 2023.

Moore finished just one vote clear of fellow midfielder Trent Dumont and eight ahead of forward Jed Hagan in the count held at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Monday night.

SANFL coach Tyson Goldsack also announced on Monday night that Moore has been named captain for 2024, succeeding retiring captain, Cam Sutcliffe.

Moore missed two games through suspension in the middle of the season but polled votes in the 17 games he did play to claim his first A.R. McLean Medal.

It capped an outstanding season for the 24-year-old, after he was also awarded a second consecutive Anthony Williams Memorial Trophy as the SANFL contracted player of the year.

“I’ve been so grateful to Port giving me an opportunity last year,” Moore said.

“To Lobbes (Matthew Lobbe) and Goldy (Goldsack), to put on the black and white has been such a privilege. To even captain (the team) next year is unreal, I can’t believe it.

“All the boys, we made finals and I’m so stoked for that…and hopefully we can go one better next year and win the whole thing.”

Moore led the club for tackles and ranked second in the competition with a total of 152 or 8.9 per game on average.

He also averaged 17 disposals and four clearances per game, and booted 12 goals for the season including three in a best on ground showing against West Adelaide in Round 11.

Dumont fell just short despite polling 17 votes against Moore’s 10 in the final two games of the season.

Young midfielders Hugh Jackson and Jackson Mead made up the top five vote getters for the season.

Long-time volunteer Chris Glacken was awarded the Bob Clayton Memorial Award recognising him for his loyal service to the club’s operations and for demonstrating Bob Clayton’s qualities of being positive, honest, trustworthy, loyal and committed.
