PORT ADELAIDE has completed its pre-season with a final hit-out at Alberton Oval on Friday night with development coach Hamish Hartlett confirming the players got through relatively unscathed.

Captain Connor Rozee appeared to hurt his toe early in the hit-out but Hartlett said he expected the skipper to be available to face Collingwood in Round one, while young forward Tom Anastasopoulos would be assessed after rolling his ankle late on.

While the coaches were initially disappointed with a slow start, players worked into the contest and the intensity lifted.

Speaking to Adelaide media afterwards, Hartlett discussed the performances of some of the new recruits, the reason for the hit-out and how a couple of left footers have settled into the backline.

Hamish Hartlett on captain Connor Rozee’s sore toe:

“He's fine. He's all good. He bumped his toe but was all smiles after the game so he's no issues. It's honestly a case of it was a little bit sore afterwards but he came off fine. He was upstairs, and absolutely no worries afterwards. He’s a guy who has done everything so far in the preseason so it's an absolute zero risk policy with Connor (and) he's good to go.”

Hamish Hartlett on his view of Friday night’s hit-out:

“It was an interesting one. For the first sort of 10 to 12 minutes it really wasn't the way we had trained for all summer. It was very much sort of kick and catch and a little bit slow with our ball movement, but I think Kenny gave them a bit of a rev up after about the 10 minute mark, and we saw a bit more of the footy that we're trying to play this year - lots of run and carry and handball, overlap and that sort of stuff, and some goals out the back so that was pleasing.

“The intention going in was even sides and a pretty evenly matched contest, and I think that's what we got. It was only sort of three or four points (the difference) at the end of the end of the game so it's all worked out well.”

Hamish Hartlett on the challenge of playing an internal trial the week before Round 1:

“It's a tricky one to manage. Definitely the players understand that, from a conditioning point of view, these games are very important. We feel like the way it was managed tonight with the few drills and then sort of 60 minutes worth of game time was perfect for the way we try and prepare for next week. But there's definitely the element of wanting to get through and wanting to get them the conditioning side of things there but not come out too battered and bruised by the end of it. So yeah, everyone for the most part got through well and we're good to go for next week.”

Hamish Hartlett on how Joe Richards has settled into his new club:

“We've seen some early signs, haven't we? He's a very exciting player, like, I don't want to talk him up too much, but he's a guy that's physically got great attributes. He can run all day, he's very fast, he's agile, he's a good thinker with the footy, and he's a little bit older, so he's got a mature head on his shoulders as well, and he makes the right decision. So he's certainly going to add a different look for us this year. He’s a great guy to have around a footy club too, and gets along well with everyone. So very, very happy to have him as a part of our group.”

Hamish Hartlett on Joe Berry’s pre-season:

“There's been no secrets that we rate Joey really highly around the footy club. Kenny's a big, big fan of him, and again, he's not really done much wrong throughout this preseason. He's got great attributes to come in and play a role for us pretty early on in the season, I think, at AFL level. So, he'll be there or thereabouts at selection next week, for sure. “

Hamish Hartlett on Jeremy Finlayson’s shift into the backline:

“Jez Finlayson showed why he could be a handy little acquisition for us down back with some intercepts and some nice kicking back there.

“He's only spent sort of two or three weeks down there, so he's raw in that role. He's got plenty to learn and plenty to educate himself with, but he's has delved into it head first, and he's spending plenty of time with Goldie (Tyson Goldsack) trying to understand the role more, and he understands that there's some things that you need to continue to tidy up, but the way he marks a footy and kicks a footy back there for a big man is exceptional. So, it's an exciting sort of proposition for us.”

Hamish Hartlett on whether Esava Ratugolea and Ryan Burton will be available for selection after training separately on Friday:

“Esava did plenty of running and he ticked off what he needed to do with his rehab stuff. So, I think he's going to join in some training next week and sort of wait and see where things land at the back end of the week. I've been told that Burto is still going to be available for round one. So again, we'll need to get the right training loads into him throughout the week to make sure that he's primed and ready to go. But those two boys are either going to be there or thereabouts for next week.”

Hamish Hartlett on Kane Farrell’s evolution into a defender and performance on Friday evening:

“He's one that has only spent the last sort of 12 to 18 months down back, and he's really finding the little details in his game that are going to elevate him from a good to a very, very good player. He's got some great attributes. His kicking is exceptional. He's a really hard worker, and I've liked the way he's actually developed into a good defending defender, rather than just a ball distributor off half back. He's actually winning some battles one-on-one now. So, you know, he'll be looking to take his game to another level this season.”
