Port Adelaide AFLW senior coach Lauren Arnell has penned a one-year contract extension that will see her remain at the club until at least the end of 2026.

As the inaugural coach of Port Adelaide’s AFLW side, Arnell has played a pivotal role in establishing the foundations of the women’s program at Alberton, having taken the reigns in 2022 after two years as head coach of the Brisbane Lions Academy.

Last year, in just the club’s third season in the competition, Arnell led her side to a historic eight-game winning streak and a maiden finals campaign, falling short to North Melbourne in the preliminary final.

A pioneer of women’s football, she was Carlton’s inaugural AFLW captain and became the first former player to be appointed senior coach of an AFLW team.

A member of the AFLPA Advisory Board, Arnell was integral in shaping the women’s competition before its inception and harnessed her passion for women’s coaching by developing the AFL’s ‘She Can Coach’ program to support and elevate women in the industry.

Since joining Port Adelaide, she has displayed a unique ability to build authentic connections with players, coaches, and support staff - one of her defining strengths in bringing the best out of those around her.

Arnell said she was excited to continue her journey with the club.

“It’s been incredible to be part of Port Adelaide’s AFLW journey since the start, and I am really pleased to continue my journey here at Alberton for another season,” Arnell said.

“It’s been a privilege to be part of building this program from its the entry into the competition. I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made and excited by the direction we’re heading.

“We’ve got a young, driven group of players and coaches committed to building something special here. To have the opportunity to lead this team and continue to grow our program for another year is something I am grateful for, and don’t take for granted.”

Port Adelaide’s Head of AFLW Shane Grimm is pleased to see Arnell remain at Alberton.

“Lauren is a passionate and outstanding leader who invests significant time and energy into our playing group and the wider AFLW program,” Grimm said.

“Her deep understanding of the game and women’s sport, combined with her ability to connect genuinely with people, makes her an exceptional coach. We’re thrilled to have her on board for at least another year.”

Port Adelaide will kick off its 2025 NAB AFLW season on Sunday, August 17 against Fremantle at Alberton. Tickets are on sale now.
