Jez McLennan has been named Port Adelaide’s newest SANFL captain, set to wear the number one guernsey in 2026.

Talented and versatile, the 25-year-old joined the Magpies from Central District ahead of the 2025 season, with the opportunity to train with the AFL group a key drawcard.

Last year’s A.R. McLean Medal runner-up, McLennan’s outstanding leadership is founded on high training standards, attention to detail and approachability.

The defender was on Gold Coast’s list for four years, and on his return to South Australia, he twice earned the Fos Williams Medal, given to the SANFL’s best on ground in a state game.

In 2025, he averaged 15 disposals, 5.4 marks and 2.6 tackles from 17 games for the Magpies, and was once again selected for the state team in April.

“It’s a huge honour to lead Port Adelaide in the SANFL,” McLennan said.

“It’s still dawning on me how much of a privilege it is to wear the number one for such a prestigious club, with so much history and success.

“I always hope to lead with my actions and I’m excited to support my teammates to be the best they can be. I’m really looking forward to the season ahead, and to what we can achieve as group.”

McLennan succeeds Nick Moore as skipper, who led the side for two seasons following Cam Sutcliffe’s retirement.

Port Adelaide general manager of football Ben Rutten congratulated McLennan on his appointment.

“We are thrilled to appoint Jez as our next SANFL captain,” Rutten said.

“Jez is an outstanding person and footballer, and we have no doubt in his ability to guide the Magpies this year.

“Jez leads from the front with his high intensity at training, his energy on game days, and the way he performs every time he takes the field.

“We know he will lead with passion and integrity and we are pleased to give him this opportunity.

“We’re also grateful to Nick Moore for his service as captain over the last two years. Anyone who knows Nick, knows how fearless and hard at the footy he is, and how he gives his all to this club. We look forward to him putting his best foot forward this year.”

Port Adelaide will host Sturt for a pre-season practice match on Saturday, 28 February at Alberton Oval.
