Port Adelaide assistant coach Luke Webster spoke with the Adelaide media following the Round 1 team review on Tuesday.

Webster highlighted the lack of method and execution from the Power at times on Sunday, while giving credit to North Melbourne for their ability to get the game on their terms.

He also gave an update on Todd Marshall’s ankle, discussed tackle technique, and touched on the selection discussions that will continue ahead of Round 2.

Webster on the game review
“It was a good review. We're really clear as a coaching group of some of the things we want to continue to keep working on. Carry’s (Josh Carr) had a really strong plan throughout this pre-season, and on the weekend, we didn't quite execute that plan. Obviously, there was a lot around our team defence and how we continue to get that organised and work together as a group and we showed some edits to the group on that. But then some stuff around our contest. The stuff that we knew (North) were going to bring, they brought really well, and we just didn't execute our plans.”

Webster on what didn’t work on Sunday
“Part of it is, you’ve got to give credit to North in that space, they executed their plan really well against us. There were so moments where our work rate and intent at times was there, but the method and system behind it wasn't as sharp as what we would have liked it to be. And then that was what this review was about, about giving clarity when you're in this moment, you're in this role, what do you need to execute for us to be able get it done.

“Clearly we needed to be better at what we needed to execute, so we don't shy away from that at all. And we've got to continue to keep getting this group to understand the way that we want to play and the method we want to play with. And as I mentioned before, you've got to give credit to North. The way they executed their plans was better than the way we executed. So we’ve got to keep working in that space to be better.”

Webster on the external criticism following Round 1
“Yeah, definitely (we know that people will have opinions). I think we gave up 118 marks, and we knew going into the game that they were going to try and find some marks and switch the ball around, and we just weren't sharp enough to be able to close that down. So as I said, in that team review, we worked our way through that and finding moments within the game, how do we work together better? And how do we take that away? It's definitely fixable. And I've seen it throughout this whole pre-season, you know, from where we started from when I walked in the door here, to where we are now, and we didn't execute on the weekend. But I've seen us execute the plan that we wanted to go in, and we just didn't do that.”

Webster on tackling technique on Sunday
“A stat we had, I think we were ranked third in the comp for tackle attempts. We just didn't execute our moment in that tackle. So we’ve got to get to work at that definitely. You know, it's in intent and in technique. But again, I keep talking about North but their ability to be able to break some of those tackles, we ‘ve got to look into that ourselves. But from turning up and trying to put those tackles on, our players are in those positions to do it. We just didn't execute. On the weekend, looking through a number if them, a lot of it was a bit of a technique (issue).”

Webster on Todd Marshall
“Yeah, we're hopeful (he will be available Sunday). Obviously, he had his scans the other day, and they came back with just a little ankle sprain. So hopefully on Thursday, we'll get through the main session, and then he’ll be up for selection. When I saw it happen, obviously with the amount of footy that he's missed, you just never know, and then not being able to play out the rest of the game. It's great that, obviously we got the good result (with his ankle), and hopefully we can get him up this week.

“I thought he started the game really well with his aerial staff, and then obviously be able to execute and see the game really well by foot was really pleasing. He's taken some great steps forward. And I think the move for him down to the back line, he can really complement our group going forward and hopefully continues to build his game.”

Webster on the external narrative of having an “easy draw”
“I don't think (that’s impacted us). We certainly didn't talk about our draw. We want to respect every team that we come up against. And you've seen it across the two weekends so far. If they play their best footy and you don't bring your best footy, then the results aren't going to go your way. So we certainly haven't spoken about that. But as a group, we know that we needed to be better, and we’ve got to bring that this week.”

Webster on Jason Horne-Francis
“Being in these four walls and seeing him train from where I walked in here, and he wasn't training at all, to where he got himself to on the weekend. He's done a mountain of work. You know, as a whole collective, we didn't play well, and he was a part of that. And I know he was disappointed in his own performance. But as a whole group, we didn't execute what we needed to do. I know he's got pride in his own performance, and he's going to bounce back. If you look at our training session a couple of weeks ago, he's the most dominant player in our match sim. He had some good training in behind him and some great evidence he just didn't execute, like the rest of us, on the weekend.

“There were elements where we changed his role around throughout the game to try and get him going. And we did that to multiple players as well. Jase Burgoyne started at half back, ended up on the wing. Rose (Connor Rozee) spent a bit of time at half back. We tried to continue to change things up as a coaching group to get some of the guys going. And I think Hornet from the work that he's done in this last little period, to get himself to now he's going to bounce back really quickly, like the rest of our group will.”

Webster on Jack Lukosius in the SANFL trial game
“He performed really well. Obviously, there were a number of guys that didn't get the nod this week in round one, but I thought he in particular, was one of the guys that went back and performed really well. His ability to be able to get up and down the ground and provide options and give us a contest was really pleasing and obviously he’ll come into selection (conversations) this week.”

Webster on selection discussions
“If you look at our performance against West Coast, the forwards that played in that game got the opportunity to play this week, and they all performed really well (in the West Coast game). The pleasing thing is there was some good debate around our selection. It wasn't like, hey, here's the guys that we're just going to play and they’re going to get a game. We actually had some great debate around who comes in. You look at Ratugolea, obviously hadn't played many of our internal or practice matches, got an opportunity to come in.

“Obviously we didn't perform as a group across the board. So there's some selection stuff that we'll need to look at. But the pleasing thing is, (Lukosius) went back and performed really well, so he's put his hand up, and if we see as a match committee to bring him in, we want the best mix that's going to help us beat Essendon.”

Webster on Dante Visentini
“Definitely centre bounce, he was really dominant, I thought, which was great. And he's a young kid that's growing and developing. We know Xerri is a quality ruckman around the ground. And they both had their moments throughout and it was pretty even throughout the day."

Webster on Jase Burgoyne
“The flexibility of some of those guys who can play half back, on ball, wing, (Burgoyne) is certainly a part of that. The more contest players and good ball users out of the back half that we can have are certainly going to help us go forward, and he's a part of that.”
