Lower amassed 30 touches rotating through the midfield and defence and, along with Power teammate Matt Thomas who had more than 20 possessions, heaped pressure on the selection committee ahead of the Power’s trip west on Sunday.
The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
In all, there were 17 Power players in action in the SANFL over the weekend, with the Trevena and Cochrane's full wrap below.
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Nick Lower (for Norwood v Port @ the Parade) – A standout performer, Nick ran hard both ways, used the ball well and got back to spoil. He dominated the midfield with 13 kicks, 17 handballs and 6 marks. He’s really putting his name up for the selectors to consider with the consistent footy he’s playing.
Matt Thomas (for Norwood v Port @ the Parade) – Matt played his typically hard and tough style, chasing and tackling well. He finished with 24 touches and 5 marks and will also be putting pressure on our starting 22.
Jason Davenport (for West v South @ Noarlunga) – Jase is playing really good footy, running hard and applying a lot of pressure to the opposition midfield. One of his best attributes is his tackling and he applied a number of very strong tackles. Finished with 16 kicks, 2 marks and 7 handballs as well as 5 really good tackles. With performances like that he’ll be another putting his name up for selection.
Hamish Hartlett (for West v South @ Noarlunga) – Played on a half forward flank for the Bloods and applied himself well with some very effective kicking. Got through the match unscathed and looked good, finishing with 9 kicks, 6 marks, 5 handballs and 1.1.
Tom Logan (for Glenelg v Sturt @ the Bay) – Tommy was his usual hard-bodied in and under self. He battled hard in the midfield and half forward, ran hard both ways, stuck his head over the ball and ended up with three goals.
Danny Meyer (for Glenelg v Sturt @ the Bay) – Slotted in on the half back flank and did some nice things in his first game since returning to South Australia. Danny’s got great skills and he showed that again on the weekend. With a bit more fitness behind him, he’ll be able to run and link up and he’ll be a very damaging player.
Toby Thurstans (for Sturt v Glenelg @ the Bay) – Toby was one of Sturt’s better players finishing with 19 possessions in the backline. He provided great rebound and was super competitive at the contest.
Jonathon Giles (for Central v Eagles @ Elizabeth) – He came into the game feeling pretty crook after being knocked about with a virus, which meant he didn’t have as big an influence as previous weeks. Still showed some good signs in the ruck but didn’t spend a whole lot of time on the ground being ill. Kicked a good goal in the last quarter after a nice lead-up mark.
Matt Westhoff (for Central v Eagles @ Elizabeth) – Matt moved around a lot early in the game looking for lead-up marks. He only kicked one goal but looked dangerous inside 50 and was probably stiff not to kick a couple more goals. A solid game overall that put his name in the mix for selection.
Nick Salter (for Eagles v Central @ Elizabeth) – Nick looked very dangerous early, kicking two goals but midway through the second term he got a migraine and was forced from the field for a short period. That knocked him about a bit but he returned and finished with 3.3. He was a real livewire up forward - taking a couple of strong marks - until he went off.
Paul Stewart (for Eagles v Central @ Elizabeth) – Paul was probably the best of our players on the night. He rebounded well and was a pest for Central’s forward line. Linked up well and gave his opponents nothing. Finished with more than 20 possessions and 10 marks.
Jarrad Redden (for Eagles v Central @ Elizabeth) – He didn’t get all that much game time but competed well in the ruck despite some good opponents in Giles, Griffin and McKenzie. The way he hunted the ball at the stoppage was very impressive..
Matt Lobbe (for Port reserves v Norwood reserves @ the Parade) – Matty played at CHF and moved nicely giving Port’s midfield plenty of opportunities to kick to him. He had 13 possessions, 5 marks and 2 goals and is improving with each week. He’ll be hoping for a league spot soon.
Matthew Martin (for West reserves v South reserves @ Noarlunga) – Played in the ruck, CHF and CHB and is still finding his feet a bit after returning from a shoulder injury. He ended up with 5 kicks, 2 marks and 4 handballs along with 2 behinds.
Jesse Laurie (for West reserves v South reserves @ Noarlunga) – Jesse played on a wing despite having a stomach virus during the week. Not his best game, but worked through the virus and finished with 7 kicks, 4 marks and 5 handballs.
Mitch Farmer (for Sturt reserves v Glenelg reserves @ the Bay) – Mitch played half back and wing and had 17 possessions in a solid game. He had a good influence whenever he was around the ball – going very hard at the contest – but we’d just like him to make a few more contests.
Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v Central reserves @ Elizabeth) – Looked very dangerous early, completing a few great repeat leads. He was good when he was fresh but his fitness base was still a bit off where we’d like it to be. As a raw youngster that’s something he’ll be able to work on for the next couple of years – sustaining his good efforts. He ended up with two goals.
