The display had the Power’s development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, suggesting Motlop is ready to step up to the next level, with injuries to key players creating an opportunity for in-form SANFL players.
The award – Motlop’s second for 2009 – is judged by the Power development coaches and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
With injuries starting to take their toll at the Power, it was a slightly quieter week in the SANFL, but the boys in action didn’t disappoint with Danny Meyer and Matthew Broadbent impressing again. The full wrap is below.
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Marlon Motlop (for North v Glenelg @ the Bay) – A great day for Marlon racking up plenty of touches on the half back line and pushing forward to half forward. Finished with 23 kicks, 4 marks, 6 handballs and 1.1, hardly wasting a possession. He again worked hard to link up from defence and went on some long gut busting runs to provide an option. His defensive positioning and pressure keeps improving as do his hard ball gets and spoiling. He’ll really be pushing for selection this week.
Daniel Stewart (for North v Glenelg @ the Bay) – Stewie showed some great glimpses of what he’s capable of on the weekend with some good marking and a good work rate. He had 8 kicks, 6 marks, 1 handball and 2.1 and had a real impact around the ground and at the ruck contest. His work rate was a feature and he managed to get to 20 marking contests and he keeps improving each week. We’re just looking for him to be near his best for four quarters.
Wade Thompson (for North v Glenelg @ the Bay) – A quiet day for Wade with 8 touches and a behind. He just needs to keep working on his positioning and winning his own ball and his form will turn around.
Danny Meyer (for Glenelg v North @ the Bay) – Another busy day for Danny on a half back flank, racking up plenty of the ball with 15 kicks, 4 marks, 8 handballs and 15 handball receives as well as an impressive 5 tackles. He linked up well for the Bays and pushed the ball long inside 50 to their marking targets. He’s been very good so far this year and his consistency is putting pressure on the coaches to consider elevating him.
Jonathon Giles (for Central v North @ the Bay) – Another good game by Joffa despite limited time on ground. Got forward to kick a goal, had 12 possessions and did some great work in the ruck and at ground level in the stoppages.
Matthew Westhoff (for Central v West @ Elizabeth) – Westy had a different role against West, playing a semi negating role on Damian Cupido. Did a good job defensively – despite playing forward – and coach Roy Laird was happy with his efforts. It would be great if Westy could have added a couple of goals to a good performance like that.
Paul Stewart (for Eagles v Sturt @ Woodville) – A quieter day by Stewie’s standards against some tough opposition. Finished with 10 possessions but still worked hard defensively and tried to help out by leaving his man and get in front of Chambers, who had a day out with 11 goals.
Matthew Broadbent (for Eagles v Sturt @ Woodville) – Had a great impact in a new position, kicking three goals playing in the forward line. Again played strong, courageous footy and he’s now become a very consistent SANFL player.
Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v Sturt reserves @ Woodville) – Another good game from the Cougar, with 3 goals and 12 touches. Showed good defensive pressure and even pushed onto the wing, adding another string to his bow. Just needs to take things to the next level and kick himself a bag.
Mitch Banner (for Eagles reserves v Sturt reserves @ Woodville) – Mitch’s first game back after a head injury and he looked very good in the first half, especially at the stoppages. Finished with 22 possessions but ran out of legs in the second half, which is to be expected after a few weeks out injured.
Mitch Farmer (for Sturt reserves v Eagles reserves @ Woodville) – A 17 touch game from Mitch, and although he started slowly, he worked his way into the game and played some tough footy with some good, hard tackling. He played on the ball and at half back and had a good impact at the stoppages. Will be looking for league selection soon.
Jackson Trengove (for Port reserves v South reserves @ Noarlunga) – Jacko played three quarters at centre half back and again got through unscathed. His opponent got a bit of the ball in the first quarter, but he tightened the screws in the second and third and kept things quiet after that. We’re really happy with his progress at this point.
Matthew Lobbe (for Port reserves v South reserves @ Noarlunga) – Matty had a good day, playing mainly up forward. He worked hard to get to the contest and provided a real option up forward, having two shots on goal in the first quarter. He keeps developing and with more performances like that he’ll be pushing for league selection.
Jesse Laurie (for West reserves v Central reserves @ Elizabeth) – Another solid game on a half back flank for Jesse. Found it hard early against some good opposition and couldn’t provide as much rebound, but still played well defensively. He’ll be a chance for a league call up.
