Tom Clurey
Clurey was selected by Port Adelaide as a second-round draft pick in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft. A tall defender, Clurey demonstrated his capability throughout the NAB AFL U18 National Championships as a fast, running rebound player. He recorded a 15.1 in the draft combine beep test which set him apart from all other tall defenders at the camp. TIMELINE 2013 After starting in the reserves for Glenelg, Clurey progressed well as a key defender, breaking into the senior side later in the year. 2014 Clurey played one game in 2014 – his debut in Round 1 against Carlton – and showed his potential as a capable replacement at full-back. He spent the rest of the season as a key defender in the SANFL and frequently matched up on some of the best forwards in the state league. A strong foundation year from which he will look to build for 2015. 2015 Clurey was solid in the SANFL and played through the club's finals campaign at the Adelaide Oval. He also filled the shoes of the Power's senior key backman in eight AFL games during the season and laid a strong foundation in terms of his fitness. He signed a contract extension during the year to tie him to Port Adelaide for another two seasons. 2016 A foot injury curtailed his season but he played the final nine games and became the heir apparent to long-standing full-back Alipate Carlile who retired at the conclusion of the season. 2017 Clurey played every game in 2017 and was extremely solid in the defensive half. It was important to get some games into the 23-year-old after an injury-ravaged 2016. 2018 Another strong season saw Tom Clurey play 19 games in 2018. A foot injury ended his season prematurely, however. The strong defender found a bit of the ball, while also playing a quality shutdown role. He averaged 12.4 touches, five marks and two tackles a game.At A Glance Junior Clubs: Katamatite Clubs: Port Adelaide (2012 National Draft, pick 29) Debut: Rd 1, 2014 v Carlton Recruited from: Murray Bushrangers (Vic) Sponsor: JC Mini Buses
