PORT ADELAIDE and Glenelg have had a strong rivalry over the years in the SANFL, but this year’s Statewide Super League Semi Final is the first time the two sides have met in a final since 1993.

Port defeated Adelaide by 30 points in the qualifying final last weekend to book a clash with the Tigers - who won their first minor premiership since 2009 - in Sunday afternoon’s second semi final.

Port and Glenelg have met in 23 finals in their history, with the Magpies winning 15 of those contests.

The last time the Magpies and Tigers did battle in a final was in the 1993 qualifying final where Port led from start to finish.

The men from Alberton booted nine goals to two in the opening quarter and then nine goals to five in the third term to set up a 34-point victory.

Scott Hodges was at his brutal best, booting nine goals, while Daryl Borlase (four goals), Mark Tylor (three) and Shane Bond (three) were also potent in front of goals.

John Fidge did his best to keep the Bays in the contest with four majors of his own, but it wasn’t enough as the Magpies held on to win.

Port Adelaide also holds a 5-1 head-to-head record in grand finals.

Glenelg won its first SANFL premiership in 1934, defeating Port Adelaide by nine points in a high-scoring encounter, but the Magpies would go on to win the next five grand final encounters between the two sides.

In 1977, the Magpies were on the right side of another high-scoring encounter, running out 17.11 (113) to 16.9 (105) winners over the Bays.

Port Adelaide’s 51-point victory over the Tigers in 1981 was the club’s 27th SANFL premiership. The Magpies then went on to defeat Glenelg by 29 points in 1988, by 15 points in 1990 and 56 points in 1992.

On Sunday, Glenelg will head into the second semi final as favourites, after winning the two minor round contests between the sides in 2019.

In Round 7, the Tigers trumped Port to the tune of 49 points in trying conditions at ACH Stadium, before traveling to Alberton and winning by 24 points in Round 14, after keeping the Magpies goalless in the opening half.

Port hasn’t lost since the Round 14 encounter against Glenelg, and will also take some confidence into the big clash, with the winner progressing to this year’s grand final.

The second semi final between the Tigers and the Magpies gets underway at 3.15pm on Sunday afternoon at Adelaide Oval.
