Finlayson played 66 games for the GIANTS since debuting in 2017.

New Port Adelaide recruit Jeremy Finlayson says he’s “over the moon” to be joining the club on a three-year deal after a trade was reached earlier today between the Power and the GWS GIANTS.

Speaking on FIVEaa this afternoon, Finlayson expressed his excitement at landing at Alberton.

“It’s a massive club, been around for more than 150 years and I know how much the fans love it over here. I’ve never really played at a big club like Port Adelaide, so if I get a chance to play in front of their fans at Adelaide Oval, it will be very exciting,” Finlayson said.

Finlayson, who played 66 games for the GIANTS since debuting in 2017, said he met with Port Adelaide senior coach Ken Hinkley and the club’s on field leadership group at season’s end.

“I flew down and met with Ken Hinkley and then came back to Adelaide to have a coffee with Ollie Wines, Tom Jonas and Darcy Byrne-Jones,” he recalled.

“I just had a chat to them about what they expect and obviously the club is close to a premiership and I’m really excited to be on board. The club has shown faith in me and now I have to pay them back over the next three years.”

Finlayson, who stands at 196 cm tall, said his most likely position will be forward and as a backup ruck.

“When I sat down with Ken and the team we discussed playing as a ruck/forward. Obviously there’s a bit of talk that they’ve got some key talls already, but I just want to come in and give myself the best chance to play consistent AFL footy over here,” he said.

Alongside the on-field opportunities presented by Port Adelaide, Finlayson explained that family support played a role in his decision to leave the GIANTS.

“Me and my partner Kelly just had a little baby girl who’s seven weeks old. We wanted to have some family support as I didn’t have much back in Sydney. Port Adelaide obviously showed some interest and we got the deal done today, so as a family we’re over the moon,” Finlayson said.

Finlayson thanked the GIANTS for their support since being drafted in 2014.

“I thank them for the past seven years. It was a great time to remember and they helped me grow up to be the man I am today,” he said.
