AS the 2024 AFLW season fast approaches a key question that is yet to be answered is who will slide into the iconic number 1 guernsey, traditionally worn by the team captain.

While that number will be allocated in due course, the club’s six new players have been given their jumper numbers.

Experienced recruit Kirsty Lamb will take on the number 35, having previously worn 27 on her back in 67 AFLW games with the Western Bulldogs.

Check out the other new jumper numbers in our list below.

4 Piper Window

Formerly worn by Jade Halfpenny, the number 4 guernsey is now in the hands of Window, who comes to Port Adelaide with a strong pedigree as captain of the undefeated South Australian Under 18 Girls AFLW National Championship in 2023. There she wore number 13, the same number she donned with the AFLW Academy side, though she has most recently been wearing number 45 at Glenelg in the SANFLW.

6 Molly Brooksby

Slipping into the number 6 previously worn in 10 AFLW games by midfielder Jacqieline Yorston, Brooksby came to Port Adelaide as part of the Expansion Under 18 Talent Pathway pre-signing period as a player who had come through the club’s Next Generation Academy. At Norwood the versatile midfielder or defender wears the number 53, and she has previously worn the number 14 for South Australia’s Under 18 state side.

16 Shineah Goody

Another to come through Port Adelaide’s Next Generation Academy, Goody was highly rated by recruiters nation-wide and was picked up by the club under the same mechanism as Brooksby. From Edithburgh on the Yorke Peninsula, and a dual Under 18 All-Australian, Goody is familiar with the number 16 guernsey she will wear at Port Adelaide, having worn it for South Australia in the 2022 National Under 18 championship when she was named the Most Valuable Player. The talented and hard working midfielder has also worn the number 9 for South Australia and most recently 34 for Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFLW. Maddie McLachlan previously wore the number 16 guernsey for Port Adelaide in seven AFLW games.

22 Lauren Young

A highly prized recruit, the talented teenager has taken the number previously allocated to now retired former captain Erin Phillips. Given Phillips took on the number one guernsey traditionally reserved for the team captain, the number 22 has never been worn in the AFLW by a Port Adelaide player. No stranger to Port Adelaide, having come through the club’s Next Generation Academy, Young changes from the number 30 she has worn at West Adelaide in the SANFLW.

23 Alissa Brook

The 25th pick in the draft, Brook has landed in the number 23 guernsey. Coincidentally Brook was born on the 23rd of May, 2005. Another known to the club through her time in its Next Generation Academy, Brook is an athletic and agile half back or wing option. The number 23 guernsey was previously worn on five occasions by Lily Johnson. Brook has most recently worn the number 19 for South Australia’s Under 18 state side and the number 53 for South Adelaide.

35 Kirsty Lamb

After 67 AFLW games in the number 27 at the Western Bulldogs, Kirsty Lamb will take on the number 35, given Port Adelaide’s number 27 guernsey has proudly been worn by experienced forward Gemma Houghton in 14 AFLW games so far. Lamb immediately becomes Port Adelaide’s second most experienced player behind 68-gamer Justine Mules-Robinson, but the childhood Port Adelaide supporter also boasts an impressive list of accolades which include being the Western Bulldogs Best and Fairest and an All-Australian in 2022.
