Port Adelaide Football Club mourns the passing of Sir Eric James Neal AC, CVO, KStJ, FTSE, former Governor of South Australia and long-serving Patron of the Port Adelaide Football Club, who passed away peacefully yesterday at the age of 101.

Sir Eric's extraordinary life spanned more than a century and was defined by unwavering service to South Australia, business excellence, and deep community commitment.

Born in London in 1924 and arriving in Australia as a young migrant aged just two, Sir Eric's journey from apprentice plumber and gas fitter at the South Australian Gas Company to becoming one of the nation's most respected business leaders exemplified his remarkable work ethic and determination.

His distinguished business career, including 14 years as CEO of Boral and board positions with BHP, Westpac and other major corporations, led to his groundbreaking appointment as Governor of South Australia from 1996 to 2001 - the first South Australian appointed to the role from a business background.

Port Adelaide Chairman David Koch remembered Sir Eric Neal as a giant of South Australian public life.

"Sir Eric Neal’s influence extended across business, government, and community service,” Mr Koch said.

“His passionate support for Port Adelaide throughout his life, including his role as our club Patron, reflected his understanding of what our club means to our community of members, supporters and partners.

"Sir Eric's story - from migrant child to Governor - embodies the spirit of opportunity that we can all draw inspiration from.

"On behalf of everyone at Port Adelaide Football Club - players, staff, members and supporters - I extend our deepest condolences to his sons Peter and James, his five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and all family and friends during this time of mourning.”
