Port Adelaide AFLW senior coach Lauren Arnell has made the decision to step down from her role, concluding four seasons at the helm of the club’s women’s program.

Arnell, who has led the Power since its inaugural AFLW season, informed the club of her decision following the Christmas and New Year period.

“After deep reflection over the Christmas and New Year break, I have made the difficult decision to step away to give more time and presence to my family,” Arnell said.

“The energy, focus and commitment required to be a senior coach is significant, and I recognise that at this point in my life, I’m not able to give the role, and the program, what it truly deserves.

“It has been a privilege to lead this team since day one. Being entrusted with the responsibility of building the program from its inception is something I will always be grateful for, and I am proud of what we have achieved together in our first four seasons.

“I want to sincerely thank the players, fellow coaches, football department staff, the members and supporters, and the broader Port Adelaide Football Club for their trust, support, and shared ambition.

“The relationships built and experiences gained during this journey will stay with me long after my time in the role. I remain confident in the direction of the program and wish the club and team every success in the seasons ahead.”

As the inaugural coach, Arnell played a pivotal role in establishing the foundations of the women’s program at Alberton, taking the reins in 2022 after two years as head coach of the Brisbane Lions Academy.

In just the club’s third season in the competition, Arnell led the side to a historic eight-game winning streak and its maiden finals campaign, with two finals wins and eventually falling short against North Melbourne in the preliminary final.

Her tenure also included Port Adelaide’s first AFLW Showdown win in 2025, as well as coaching Indy Tahau and Matilda Scholz to maiden All-Australian selection.

A pioneer of AFLW, Arnell was Carlton’s inaugural AFLW captain and became the first former AFLW player to be appointed senior coach of an AFLW team.

Port Adelaide Football Club Chief Executive Officer Matthew Richardson paid tribute to Arnell’s contribution.

“Lauren has been instrumental in establishing and developing our AFLW program from the ground up,” Richardson said.

“Her dedication, professionalism, and commitment to building a competitive and respected program has been outstanding. We are very grateful for Lauren’s contribution to Port Adelaide and fully respect her decision to prioritise her family at this time.

“Lauren leaves our AFLW program in a strong position, and we wish her and her family all the very best for the future.”

The club will now commence the process of appointing a new AFLW senior coach and will provide further updates when appropriate.
