Port Adelaide General Manager - Football Chris Davies on Ollie Wines:

“I spoke to Ollie (Wines) when that first broke last week.

“And obviously the month before when it was spoken about, and the month before that when it was mentioned as well. There is nothing really to address.

“It’s interesting the number of names that come out either during or after the trade period. I even saw a report about Robbie Gray.

“Trade period - names get thrown up.”

Davies on the speculative nature of the trade period:

“We talk about players all of the time.

“The question that we should all be asking is, what step happens next? If nothing happens, then it’s the same discussion many clubs have about good players across the competition.

“Whether its Wines or Gray or Boak. Whether its us asking about other clubs’ players.

“It’s what happens at this time of year.”

Davies sums up Port’s trade period:

“We said at the start that we would be more looking at players leaving the club rather than guys coming in.

“We thought there was a time Orazio Fantasia might be looking to come back to Adelaide - that didn’t eventuate, so we moved on from that very quickly.

“Overall, we are very pleased to have another pick early on in this coming draft to add some extra top-end talent to our list.”

Davies on Sam Gray:

“We spoke to Sam (Gray) throughout the year about how 2020 would look like.

“At the time, Sam was looking for a longer-term deal and some additional security. We will have that discussion with his manager over the next couple of days.

“The reality is, there wasn’t a club willing to take Sam through the trade period. He will now have to assess his options as much as we will.”

Davies on the club’s approach post the trade period:

“You have to look at where you have depth and where you don’t.

“We will be able to approach that throughout the delisted free agency period and also the draft - the national draft and the rookie draft.

“All of our decisions that are made throughout the trade period are done on the basis of knowing what’s going to be coming up in the draft period. One, two, three years ahead as well.”

Davies on understanding the frustration of fan about Dougal Howard trade:

“I do. Of course, I do.

“In these situations you have to weigh up what you believe is best for the club for any point in time. There are a whole heap of factors that go into those decisions.

“At no point do you look and think that they’re not hard decisions to make. They are made on the balance of what you think is right at the time.

“List management is an inexact science, but the reality is, we think we will be better off for this trade happening, and that’s why we did it.”

Davies on Port’s list management strategy:

“The idea that we are building to win a final is not right. We are wanting to build a list to win a premiership.

“We got to the end of 2018 and made some decisions that were reasonably bold at the time. We brought some players in who we think are going to help us longer-term and short-term.

“Rozee and Duursma had fantastic seasons, and Butters will have a better season next year. Bringing in Ryan Burton - another first-round pick - last year. High-end talent.

“We think we can do that with three or four players in this upcoming draft. This is more than looking at the finals, this is wanting to build a list that can compete to win the flag.”

Davies on where the Power could add some depth:

“I think you look at the midfield and our ability in the forward half as well.

“We will look to add some talent there and create some efficiency. We had the number one inside 50 differential last year and weren’t able to put it on the scoreboard well enough.

“Equally, I think we had the least amount of inside 50 differential against us. You can look at it and say we defend pretty well.

“We are hoping to bring in some talent that will help, but we also know that you’ve got to be able to coach some efficiency as well.”

Davies on the 2020 compromised draft:

“There is no doubt that next year’s draft is compromised to another level.

“You talk about next generation academy players, father-son players and the picks the Gold Coast Suns have.

“Next year’s draft is going to be more compromised than this one, and I imagine that will be something the AFL will have to look at into the future.

“If you have a whole heap of talent already assigned to clubs then the AFL are going to have to make a philosophical call on whether that’s a good thing for them or not.”

Davies on how the club might look to combat the compromised draft:

“We knew the 2020 draft was going to be a compromised one, so you begin to make decisions as early as you can based on that.

“It may well be trading players next year. We’ve gone through different years where we have attacked the draft hard. Or we’ve gone through free agency.

“We will have to keep all of those options in mind.”

Davies on Jackson Mead and Trent Burgoyne:

“Both of those guys are players who are available to us from a father-son perspective.

“We will have a look at assess where we think they are on our draft board and make decisions on the night.

“You can trade draft selections up until the 22nd of November and then again on the night, so we will continue to make assessments as to where they fit.”

Davies on the father-son and academies players in the next couple of years:

“It’s really important that our list management crew have a good understanding of where those players will be bid on.

“Without being able to confirm where we think that will be right now, by the time the draft hits, I suggest our people will need to be all across where they think Mead and Burgoyne will be picked.

“The same applies for next year’s draft. We’ve got Taj Schofield. We’ve got a young lad Lachie Jones who’s a part of our next gen academy.

“We’ve got to have a mind to say, well what types of picks do we have to have in that following year’s draft to make sure we have enough points to be able to capitalise on that.”

Davies on Matthew Broadbent:

“It was really, really difficult.

“He’s been a fantastic player at our club for a long period of time. A fantastic player. A fantastic guy to have at the club.

“He always did what the club wanted him to. He was such a clean player at his peak.

“We wish Matthew all the best now with whatever path he takes, whether it be SANFL or if he’s able to get onto another AFL list. We wish him all the best.”
