Senior coach Josh Carr said Port Adelaide wants to be a hard team to play against, with the side focused on continuously building its game throughout the season.
The Power is hoping to turn its fortunes around with a win at the MCG this weekend, currently holding a 0-5 win-loss record from the two clubs’ last five meetings.
Carr spoke with the Adelaide media on Friday about selection decisions, how he wants to approach Collingwood, and Jack Lukosius’ return to AFL football.
Carr on Tony Modra’s situation
“My first thought was it was devastating news to hear about it, and obviously our thoughts as a football club are with Tony's family and with him, and the Adelaide Football Club. I think all our memories, for me in particular of growing up was if you took a hanger, it was Modra! So, he's had a massive impact on the community, so everyone's thinking of him, but also his family.”
Carr on Todd Marshall
“Yeah, we are (backing him in). We feel he's not far away from having a bigger impact on the game. He's important to our structure right now, and playing on the MCG, he gets an opportunity. We’re not hiding from the fact that we need more, but we feel like we can get that going in the team.”
Carr on Jack Lukosius’ inclusion
“He'll play on a wing, as he's done for the Maggies over the last couple of weeks, and he did before he went out of the team with us. We’ve been building towards this, and at some point you’ve got to bite the bullet and go for it, and we feel like this is the week to do that. We’re at the MCG, he's played well there before, and the impact that he can have on the wing, he can go back and support our defenders, and then get forward and still kick goals from there.”
Carr on Ollie Wines being managed this week
“It's a bit of a plan with Ollie. He'll come in next week, that will happen, but we just thought we’d either get to next week or the week after, and go, now we need to rest him. We want to get ahead of the curve a bit with him and have him ready for the Showdown.
“We want to make sure we're looking after him. We want the best out of Ollie and a fresh Ollie to be able to get in the contest and just do his best work. We don't want to run him into the ground.”
Carr on Darcy Byrne-Jones’ form
“Well, he's just consistent, Darcy, and he gave us consistency as a forward over the last few years, and then obviously we shifted him back for reasons that we needed to, but you just know what you’re going to get with Darce. His game last week was outstanding, it was one of his better ones this year, and (hopefully) he can hold that form.”
Carr on Collingwood
“Their good is very good. The way they use their hands, and through the contest, and they have probably marked a little bit more over the last few weeks. We know what their best players look like. They’ve got two Daicoses in their the team, and when you let those guys go, they can have a pretty big impact on the game. So we're aware of what their strengths are – De Goey, and a number of players that are playing well that have been around a while and played in premierships – that can have a really big impact on the game.
“I think both teams want to be hard to play against. We’re building our game, obviously defensively we're getting stronger, but we’ve also got to build our ball movement.”
Carr on a possible Butters/Daicos match-up
“Yeah, absolutely. It's a great opportunity for any players that get when you come up against the best, and the best versus the best, we all like to see that.”
Carr on Kane Farrell
“He had the week off, pulled up really well, and then went out and played a really good game, and got through the game with no problems and then pulled up poorly. So, we've had to reassess what that looks like now. He'll have a week off this week, we’ll have a look at it. We're not sure what the long-term plan looks like right now. We've just got to see what happens this week.”
Carr on Sam Powell-Pepper returning to football soon
“Pep's going well. He's a really good chance to play a half of footy next week, so we're looking forward to that. It's pretty exciting for the footy club, and just exciting for him. He's worked extremely hard and got himself into a position now where he feels like he's ready to go.”
Carr on Joe Richards playing against his old club
“It won’t be any different than any other week for Joey. He's consistent in his performance. I'm sure in the back of his mind, to always play well against your old team is always front of mind, but what we need Joey to do, which he does every week, is just play well.”
Carr on being 0-5 against Collingwood in recent years
“Well, we never discuss (that record as a group). I'm sure players read those stats and coaches you do at the same time, but you never talk about it. It’s really cliche, but it is one week at a time, and it's also the process on how you go about it. We've got a lot of things we've got to get right to win a game of footy, and it doesn't matter who we're playing against.”
Carr on being so close in multiple games
“Yeah, it's a tough roller coaster when you get on it. The fans that make the trip, and even watch on the TV, they'd love to see a win at the G against a team like Collingwood, who, there's no secret about the love-hate relationship, with probably every club versus Collingwood.”
