The Port Adelaide Football Club will farewell AFLW assistant coach Sam Virgo.

Virgo joined Port Adelaide’s AFLW coaching panel ahead of the 2023 season and has made a valuable contribution to the program across the past four seasons.

A former All-Australian defender, Virgo played 29 AFLW games across Brisbane and the Gold Coast SUNS between 2017 and 2021, including two seasons as co-captain of the SUNS.

Following her retirement from playing, Virgo transitioned into coaching, including making history as the first female senior coach of the Queensland boys NAB AFL Under-17 Championships team.

Port Adelaide Head of AFLW Dan Merrett thanked Virgo for her contribution to the club.

“Sam has made a significant impact on our AFLW program over the past four seasons. Her ability to build genuine relationships with players, combined with her football knowledge and passion for developing others, has left a lasting mark on our group,” Merrett said.

“She has been a valued member of our club and someone who has helped shape the culture and growth of our program.

“While we'll miss having her around, we're excited for her and her family as they return home to Queensland.

“We thank Sam for everything she has contributed and wish her all the very best for the next chapter.”

Port Adelaide will confirm its AFLW coaching structure for the 2027 season in the new year.
