PORT ADELAIDE moved into the top eight with a 57-point victory over Sydney at Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Port led at every change, and kicked eight goals to three after half-time to overrun the gallant Swans in wintery conditions. Here are the talking points from the Power’s Round 21 victory.

Port’s young brigade continue to develop nicely:

Darcy Byrne-Jones was Port’s most prolific ball-winner against the Swans, collecting 28 disposals and seven marks, in yet another impressive performance from the 23-year-old.

Connor Rozee, 19, kicked three goals from his 20 disposals (10 of them contested) and continued to be a spark in Port’s forward half.

21-year-old Peter Ladhams had his best game at AFL level, having career-highs for kicks (12), handballs (11), disposals (23), clearances (7) and marks (4).

Dan Houston (19 touches, nine tackles and two goals), Todd Marshall (11 possessions, eight tackles and two goals) and Sam Powell-Pepper (20 disposals and six tackles) were also impressive.

Co-captains combine for most influential game:

Port’s co-captains Ollie Wines and Tom Jonas have both missed chunks of 2019 through injury, but on Saturday they had arguably their best combined game for the year.

Jonas was a rock in defence, collecting 24 touches, eight rebound 50s, six marks and disposing at 92 per cent efficiency.

Wines - who was a late replacement for Zak Butters - had a real impact in the middle of the ground. The 24-year-old bounced back from three weeks out with a broken thumb to have 22 disposals, five tackles and two goals.

The big men at each end stood tall:

Tom Clurey continues to play a strong role in the last line of Port Adelaide’s defence, and is putting together perhaps his best season of football.

Clurey’s strength this season has been his ability to either win or halve the contest, and on Saturday that was on show again with the 193-centimetre defender taking four strong contested intercept marks. He finished with 18 disposals and eight marks.

Charlie Dixon returned to AFL football in Round 14 this season - after a horrific leg injury in 2018 - and has taken a little bit of time to get back into the swing of things.

Dixon kicked six goals in his first five games this season, before a week back in the SANFL. His numbers in last week’s win over Essendon didn’t look impressive but he played a role. Against Sydney on Saturday he had a big influence.

The 28-year-old booted three goals but most importantly crashed packs, took contested marks and was a really physical presence.
