PORT ADELAIDE assistant coach Jarrad Schofield is frustrated by the results of the last three weeks, but is happy with the attitude of the playing group.

Port had a disappointing one-point loss to Greater Western Sydney on Saturday and, despite the loss, Schofield says the whole club is attacking the last month of the home-and-away season with intent.

“We are up for the fight, there is no question about that,” Schofield said at a press conference on Monday afternoon at Alberton.

“The biggest thing for us as a club is looking week to week and we know we have to win.

“You can’t question the attitude of the players. You saw on the weekend - we fronted up again and it was probably one that got away.

“We get a great opportunity this week, and regardless of the ladder, we need to make sure we are up for the fight and get a win on the board.”

Schofield said the playing group is continuing to learn from their close losses, and admitted the mind-frame of the young group is still positive despite the disappointing results.

“You learn a lot from your losses,” he said.

“There are always parts of your game you can improve. The good thing from our players is they have been buying into that, and we have seen progression from week to week.

“We have a young group. They are resilient. We need to make sure we stay in a positive frame of mind, and they have been doing that.

“We learn from the weekend’s game as well. We gave ourselves opportunities, we just need to make sure we reward ourselves by finishing off.”

The midfield coach was proud of the way key forward Charlie Dixon and speedy midfielder/forward Steven Motlop responded in the SANFL on the weekend after being sent back to find form.

Motlop kicked four goals from 15 touches and seven marks, while Dixon responded with 11 disposals, five marks, three tackles and three goals.

“It was nice they hit the scoreboard,” Schofield said.

“Proud of the two fellas to go back and show great character, and they obviously helped the Magpies get a good win.

“They played their roles, and that’s what we asked of them. It was really pleasing that they hit the scoreboard.

“It’s Monday, we will discuss their names (at selection), but the biggest thing is they went back, put the ball through the big sticks and played with confidence.”
