THE PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB often describes itself as a family and sometimes those family ties pay off.

That was certainly the case recently when Tony Wines – father of Power co-captain Ollie Wines – worked with club major partner GFG on a key project for his business.

Wines needed steel to help his business Precedent build an abattoir in the Philippines. He got a quote and was set to agree to terms with a business in Geelong for around 100 tonnes of pre-fabricated steel.

That’s when a casual chat with Ollie saw things change.

“I had a quotation for the steel from a company in Geelong and I was about to give them the go-ahead and I was talking to Ollie one day about it and he said you should get a price out of GFG,” Tony Wines explained to portadelaidefc.com.au.

“He said I’ll speak to one of the guys in our commercial team and I’m going to get him to give you a call.

“GFG are manufacturers not fabricators so they would supply the steel and they put us onto another business, a local Port Adelaide operator called Lincoln Engineers run by Peter Atsikbasis, who is a big Port Adelaide supporter, who would fabricate it.

“There were seven containers of steel in total and the final three left this week.”

Tony Wines cannot be more thankful to both GFG and Lincoln Steel for the massive operation of getting the steel he needed to the Philippines.

And, the partnership looks set to continue with the potential to do more business together.

“We’re doing the cold storage part of the abattoir,” he said.

“They’re in the process of designing the next stage, this is stage one, so as their production increases, they’ll need increased storage space, and the next part will be about three times bigger than this one.

“There is also some talk about some work in Vietnam so it could be the start of something big, for sure.

“And we’re not greedy, we want everyone to get a piece of the apple – it’s a nice circle to be involved in.”
