A MUTUAL love of football and the Port Adelaide Football Club helped a young woman and her Grandmother share some incredible memories.

Now the club is helping to honour the life of Helen Smith with a special high tea, all in aid of Cancer Council SA.

On Saturday 8 June, the sound of tea cups clinking will precede the sound of the football siren at Alberton Oval when Port Adelaide prepares to face Sturt in the SANFL.

Spearheaded by Cancer Council SA Ambassador Eliza Green, the special Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event will be held at the Port Club, where the 21-year-old shared many special memories with her Grandma Helen.

Helen died from bladder cancer three years ago despite a brave fight against the disease.

“She was referred to a specialist after finding blood in her urine with an ultrasound confirming the worst—the blood was a result of a growth in her bladder,” Eliza explained.

“She underwent BCG treatment, however the cancer continued to spread, first to her ureter and then, following unsuccessful chemotherapy, into her bones.

“Sadly, she lost her life in 2016.

“Ever since she passed away, I vowed to make a difference to the lives of others impacted by cancer and raise funds to make sure that no family has to go through what we went through.”

Helen was a passionate Port Adelaide supporter and the club was keen to get involved in honouring her memory once contacted by Eliza.

“Eliza approached the club and we were more than happy to be involved,” said Linda Crabb, Venue and Magpies Marketing Manager.

“A lot of people who are booking at the moment are telling us about how they and their families have been affected by cancer, so it’s just such a good cause.

“The fact that you get a high tea, guest speakers, some entertainment and a ticket to the footy with a great view, it just makes for a great afternoon out.”

Eliza says having Port Adelaide’s support makes the event more special.

“I went to every football game with (my Grandma) since I was a little girl and was even lucky enough to go to Melbourne to watch a couple of games, including the finals,” she said.

“I think that going to the football with her is one of my best memories.

“I can’t think of a better way to honour her memory than to host an event at the club that she loved.

“We’re hoping to raise over $6,000 which will go towards supporting all those South Australians impacted by cancer.”

Around 100 people are expected to attend the event from 12.30pm ahead of the first bounce in the Magpies’ clash against the Double Blues at 2.10pm.

With a raffle, auction and guest speakers including current player Jake Patmore, the event is value for money at just $30 per person, which includes entry to watch the game.

Tickets can be purchased by emailing lcrabb@pafc.com.au or phoning 8447 9937 by Wednesday 5 June.
