Chad Cornes has revealed he won an award – previously not made public – for his inspirational tackle against Collingwood on Saturday. Cornes is allowed to park his car right next to Mark Williams for the week after being named the team’s Tackler of the Week.

A quick trip out to the car park at the Allan Scott Power Headquarters at Alberton Oval reveals why such an award would be so sought after.

There are about 70 car parks at the Power’s training facility, each one stretching away from the facility’s entrance. Only three are reserved – Chief Executive, Senior Coach, and Tackler of the Week.

“Choco is obviously really big on tackles and pressure so Tackler of the Week gets the best park in the car park and I was lucky enough to get it for the first time ever so I was rapt with that,” Chad revealed on Tuesday.

The best tackler of the week also has his photo – usually of his best tackle – displayed within the club.

No prizes for guessing which photo will be on display this week. Chad’s desperate left arm lunge on Ben Johnson as he stormed towards the centre of the MCG will be a lasting memory from the match.

Chad was far more modest about it.

“It was just (being in the) right place, at the right time and it was just one of those ones that nine times out of ten your hand slips off but because it was wet I was able to get in there under his shorts and it stuck and we got a goal from it and it put us back in the game, so it was good. Good feeling,” Chad said.

Chad’s tackle has been nominated for the AFL’s Army Award for Round 4 and now it’s up to fans to vote. You can watch it back and vote for it by going to this page at AFL.com.au

Anzac Inspiration

Cornes said this Friday night’s game against St Kilda at AAMI Stadium had extra significance for the Anzac Day commemorations that will surround it.

“It’s great to pay tribute to everyone that fought for the country and with Dad being one of those people it just adds something special to the game coming up,” he said.

“Also with the South Australian Govt Defence Unit being in partnership with us for the game. We all know they do such a great job creating jobs here in South Australia so that adds to it as well.

“You would hope for a big crowd. Obviously the crowd against the Crows was pretty average and we still can’t work that one out but being a Friday night game, the Anzac game, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t have 35,000 there. We’ve said it 100 times before but the players really notice when the crowd is there so for all the guys out there, please come because we need you.”
