AS Port Adelaide’s selection committee decides its best fit for Saturday afternoon’s game against Essendon, there is one name that should get the immediate call up - that of small forward Matt Thomas.

Thomas was scrubbed out for two matches, including last weekend’s Showdown, after being reported in round 14 for rough conduct on Western Bulldogs youngster Tom Liberatore.

The Power elected not to contest the charge, which carried the risk of a three-game ban if found guilty by the AFL Tribunal.

Having served his penalty, Thomas is free to return to play Essendon at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon and if selected will be a massive inclusion to the Power which missed his trademark guts and intensity against the Crows and Geelong.

Thomas is one of Port Adelaide’s best contested midfielders and has been transformed into a solid pressure forward since returning against North Melbourne.

In his last four games Thomas averaged just below five tackles a game and 9 contested possessions.

His influence with and around the football has been a shining light in the Power midfield and his ability to win his own football will be a valuable asset against the free flowing Essendon.

Port Adelaide’s squad for Saturday’s 1.40pm game against Essendon at AAMI Stadium will be announced at 6.00pm (CST) on Thursday night.
