NEWLY appointed Port Adelaide captain Tom Jonas says it will be an honour lead his side in the number 1 guernsey in the club’s anniversary year.

Jonas was named captain on Friday afternoon, with the 28-year-old paying tribute to the players, members, supporters and staff of the club.

“It’s an absolute honour to be able to pull on the number 1 next year and follow in the footsteps of some of the great leaders this club has had,” Jonas said at packed media conference at Alberton Oval.

“I don’t think I will change as a player, but it’s an absolute privilege to wear that and be able to lead these boys and our club, and all of our membership and supporters, and our great community.

“We just want to go out there and play a brand of footy that all of those people are proud of.”

The key defender saved special mention for his vice-captain Ollie Wines, and declared the leadership wouldn’t change too much with a number of experienced players still in the group.

“I think also as we sit here today and listening to Ollie talk and the way he is conducting himself, it says plenty about the leader he is,” Jonas said.

“I’m sure the boys sitting over there feel exactly the same way. Like Kochie touched on, that won’t change his role within the group.

“It’s still going to be Hamish, Ollie and I leading this bunch of really exciting young blokes, and we are going to turn them into a football team that our members, supporters and the whole club are proud of.”

Wines threw his full support behind the newly appointed Jonas, and said the entire playing group backed the club’s decision wholeheartedly.

“Tom is the most capable to lead us at this stage,” the vice-captain said.

“I’m sure I can speak on behalf of myself and the playing group - he is the one to lead us at this stage. We will follow him to the edge of the earth.

“To be standing beside him along with Harts, it’s as much an honour as I’ve had.”
