ROUND 2 of the SANFL season saw a number of Power players performing at both senior league and reserves level, with surprising results in the form of reigning premiers Central District being well beaten and the Magpies knocking off the Tigers.
This week, Woodville-West Torrens had the bye, while Friday night saw two games being played - Norwood defeated Sturt comfortably at Adelaide Oval while in the surprise of the season so far West Adelaide thrashed Central District by 66 points at City Mazda Stadium.
All games were watched closely by development manager Daniel Healy and development coach Matthew Nicks. Their full report is below.
SANFL Player of the Week
Brett Ebert (for Magpies vs Tigers)
Brett Ebert was a stand-out and the best on ground performer in what was a really good game of football. He played midfield and forward and picked up 30 possessions and kicked a goal, having 12 touches in the third quarter alone where he turned the game around - it was a really positive performance from Brett after missing such a chunk of the pre-season, first as he recovered from his knee injury and then with a nasty bout of tonsillitis.
PTV: Player of the Week - Round 2
Daniel Bass (for Panthers reserves vs Roosters)
This was Daniel’s first game back for the year after a pre-season that was interrupted by injury. He played in the ruck and was very strong, changing with the Crows’ Sam Jacobs. His ruckwork was outstanding considering his time out of the game - his around the ground we’re still working on but it’s an area that we’re really focussing on and he’s really keen to improve.
Andrew Moore (for Roosters reserves vs Panthers)
He got more game time, getting his match fitness up and really starting to get his touch back - he’s still a little way off but there’s some really promising signs from him that he’ll be back to his best in the not too-distant future.
Callum Hay (for Roosters reserves vs Panthers)
He’s working on using his change of pace and utilising his strengths to have an impact upon the game - he had about 19 possessions and worked mainly on the wings. He finished off the game really strongly.
Aaron Young (for Roosters reserves vs Panthers)
Youngie was slow to start but he came charging home in the last quarter - in that final term alone he picked up 8 possessions, took 4 marks and kicked a goal. He’ll be going into next week with a lot of confidence after finishing the game like that.
Tom Jonas (for Redlegs vs Double Blues)
Tommy kept his opponent to three possessions - that’s a really good effort in a winning side. We’re still looking for more from him from an offensive standpoint, but he’s really working hard on that side of his game, and we’re happy with his progress as he’s coming along well.
Matt Westhoff (for Bulldogs vs Bloods)
Matt played up forward and started really well, having four touches in the first quarter and presenting as a leading forward for his midfielders. After quarter time Centrals were really under the pump and the delivery coming into the forward line wasn’t the best when it was coming in, so he had one really good quarter then after that it was a much more quiet game.
Daniel Webb (for Bloods vs Bulldogs)
He rucked for a lot of the game and played forward as well at times. He competed really well in the ruck which is something that we’ve been working on with him, and he gave Wests on-ballers a really good first-look at possession from the stoppages. He took a couple of really good marks around the ground, including a couple of really strong contested marks.
Michael Pettigrew (for Bloods vs Bulldogs)
Michael played down back for Westies for three-quarters and was very good - he had about 18 disposals and took 9 marks. He went forward later in the game and kicked 1 goal 1 and looked dangerous up there as well; it was a really solid performance from Petters.
Jacob Surjan (for Magpies vs Tigers)
Jacob continued to improve his form in 2011 as he continues to recover from the knee injury that finished his 2010 year and also delayed the beginning of his year in 2011. He performed really well, shutting down a Glenelg forward and also picking up 24 disposals himself. He was very good for Port.
John Butcher (for Magpies vs Tigers)
After last week’s stand-out performance in the SANFL he was still solid enough in a tough day for forwards - it was a very windy day and he took 5 marks and kicked 2 goals and got to a number of contents and didn’t get out-marked at any stage, which is one of the things that he’s been setting himself to do. That was very pleasing to see.
Cameron Hitchcock (for Tigers vs Magpies)
Hitch was very good for Glenelg - he had 20 touches and kicked 3 goals as he drifted between being a wingman and a small forward. He was very lively and worked very hard all day in a really solid display of football.
Mitch Curnow (for Double Blues reserves vs Redlegs)
Mitch played up forward and in the ruck. He did some nice things in the ruck and just needs to continue to work on his contested marking, which is a focus for him as he develops in his first year as part of an AFL team list in 2011.
Marlon Motlop (for Roosters vs Panthers)
Marlon got limited game time and North were well beaten by South down in Noarlunga, with Marlon unfortunately not really able to work his way into the game as a result of the game being played away from where he was stationed in the forward line when he was on the ground.
