PORT Adelaide has unveiled its player numbers for 2009, with one notable exception – the captain’s No. 1.

Returning hero Josh Carr takes the No. 2 jumper he wore at Fremantle, while hard-nut Matt Thomas inherits the No. 21 from club legend Michael Wilson.

First round draft pick Hamish Hartlett takes the No. 22 jumper, while Jackson Trengove will wear No. 12 and forward Nick Salter moves up to No. 19 after being upgraded from last season’s rookie list.

Matthew Westhoff, who made his debut in the No. 40 guernsey last year, will wear the No. 24 in 2009, vacated by Damon White.

Geelong recruit Jason Davenport has opted to take the No. 41 jumper, the same number he held at the Cats.

The other numbers for first year players are:

31 – Mitch Banner
32 – Matthew Broadbent
34 – Jarrad Redden
37 – Wade Thompson (rookie)
40 – Glenn Dawson
42 – Danny Meyer (rookie)
43 – Daniel Stewart (rookie)
45 – Matthew Martin (rookie)
46 – Jesse Laurie (rookie)

As announced previously Warren Tredrea returns to No. 16, while Danyle Pearce takes up No. 6.

Port’s new captain will be announced by the time the Power hit the field in the trial match against Sturt and the Port Magpies on Family Day (Saturday February 14).

In a new move, the incoming captain’s jumper will be retired until the player either retires or steps down from the captaincy and returns to his old number.
