MATTHEW Primus has conceded the pressure on him will continue to intensify unless Port Adelaide starts winning games.

The besieged coach, whose future has been the subject of speculation in the past week, said it was too early in the season to use his side’s 1-6 record as proof that it had failed to improve on last year’s dismal showing.

But the Power’s win-loss record, which now stands at 9-27 since Primus took over from Mark Williams in late 2010, ensures his performance will continue to be questioned.

Primus said Port Adelaide had improved and supporters should wait until later in the season before deciding whether their team was heading in the right direction.

"Have Geelong gone backwards? Have Collingwood gone backwards? Have Hawthorn gone backwards, just because of where they are in wins and losses?  I’m not sure," he said.

"Have West Coast gone ahead? So I’m not sure you can just go on round seven where people sit on the ladder whether they have improved or haven’t improved.

"We've made progress. On the win-loss it hasn't happened, but we have made progress. We've had young players play this year that have certainly improved.  Individually, in our areas, we've improved but it hasn't given us a win-loss which there's a lot of focus on in AFL footy."

Primus, who has an option in his contract that will allow him to coach the Power until the end of the 2013 season, said he was not under added pressure to turn the club around before its planned move to Adelaide Oval in 2014.

"In two years’ time we will be a lot better team," he said. "No doubt about that. But in six weeks' time I want to be a better team than where we are now and by the end of the year I want to be a better team and we will be.

"(By the end of 2012) we will be better than we were last year, not just in wins and losses but in the categories that are significant to make sure you are a competitive, effort-based team."

Primus said Port supporters would be disappointed the team wasn't winning games, but they couldn’t expect the players’ skills to improve significantly in just a few months between seasons.

He lamented his players’ ball use against Fremantle, which saw the home side score easy goals from turnovers in Port Adelaide’s defensive half.

"I think developing skill doesn't happen over six months of a pre-season. What we wanted to improve on was our strength and size and our ability to compete at stoppages and contested ball, because we thought that was an easier avenue for us to improve our list and we had more players aligned to that," he said.

"And then developing our skills, we wanted to bring in players who we thought could do that like John (McCarthy) and Chad Wingard.

"You can't improve on 20 facets of what you're going to do during the year and, during the pre-season, we're focused on three or four things that have improved from last year."
