MATTHEW Primus says that 23-year-old Daniel Stewart will be employed as a full-game forward against Essendon as his seeks to keep his three tall youngsters in specific roles.

Stewart has been recalled to the side to replace injured forward John Butcher.

Primus told the media on Friday that he will only use Matthew Lobbe and Jarrad Redden as ruckmen against the Bombers.

“They’ve [Essendon] got two [ruckmen] in there with Bellchambers coming back in and Gumbleton might do a bit too,” said Primus.

“So we think we’re going to need two this week.

“We’re going to have a look at the two rucks and see how Daniel Stewart goes just playing as a forward like Schulzy … and Westy does and see if he can take his opportunities in there.”

Stewart has played in-and-out of the Power squad this year - lining up in the first four rounds and having not played since the club’s win over the Gold Coast in Round 9.

A string of solid, multiple-goal performances back at North Adelaide in the SANFL, including a match winner against the league-leading Norwood Redlegs in June, earned him the call up this week after being named on the emergencies in games prior.

As the replacement for John Butcher, Primus wants to see whether Stewart can successfully fill the role of a tall full forward and with Jay Schulz out injured and Justin Westhoff playing further up the ground, Stewart should have ample space as a tall target deep inside Port’s attacking 50.

“We want to have a look at Daniel purely as a forward,” said Primus.

“We used him as a ruck earlier in the year - that second ruck - and he’s probably not quite ready for that.

“It’s a demanding task to be able to do a lot of power forward and then come in the ruck and compete in there.

“We’re going to have a look at the two rucks and see how Daniel Stewart goes just playing as a forward like Schulzy…and Westy does and see if he can take his opportunities in there.”
