The Outer Army Inc. is an incorporated independent supporter group created four years ago and which has only two major objectives defined by its constitution:
1. To support the PAFC in its endeavors within the AFL in whatever way possible.
2. To foster goodwill between Port supporters from all walks of life while encouraging supporters to become more involved in the club they love.
No membership fees are charged and about 85% of the members (800 to date) are financial members of the PAFC and/or other associated supporter groups, or the cheer squad. This group provides an alternative avenue to be more involved in the Club they love.
This year the Outer Army ran a campaign to raise money for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital's Emergency Department to purchase pillows.
Before the 2009 season began one of their dearly loved committee members was admitted to the QEH Emergency with what could have been a life threatening problem. Thanks to some great help from the hospital, Joy Bollmeyer is fit and well, and it was with her experience without a pillow that the fundraiser began.
Many pillows are lost to the Department each year for various reasons including theft, soiling and the ones that disappear to the wards never to be seen again.
Through the generosity of the Outer Army members and Joy's hard work along with that of the committee they were able to raise $1100.00 (plus several pillows), and this week handed the cheque to Chris Mccaskill, the Clinical Service Co-ordinator for Emergency.
Many Outer Army members attended and in a show of the true Port Adelaide spirit, the presentation was also attended by Brett Duncanson (Chairman), Bruce Abernethy and Alex Panas from the Power Board, along with the Chairman of the Port Magpies, John Firth.
All in all a satisfying exercise, a great cause and another example of Port supporters "Living the Creed".
