FREMANTLE has defeated Port Adelaide by 40 points in a scrappy game at Patersons Stadium.

First Quarter

Port Adelaide started promisingly against the breeze winning the first clearance of the game through John McCarthy, but the Power couldn’t capitalise inside 50 and the Dockers dug in.

The Power’s defensive pressure was high and forced several turnovers before John Butcher converted one of those - from an incredibly tight angle in the forward pocket.

Following an unusually ill-disciplined 50 metre penalty against Kane Cornes, Ryan Crowley bombed a 60 metre goal for the Dockers to wrestle back the lead.

Cornes quickly made up for his mistake, finding Matthew Broadbent on the lead inside 50m following some fierce defensive pressure, who goaled from 40m.

The defensive pressure was telling and led to the Power’s third goal, a snap over his head on the goal line to Paul Stewart.

Both teams squandered chances through middle section of the quarter before Matthew Pavlich snuck away from Alipate Carlile to mark and convert 35m out.

A poor kick-out from Carlile very nearly gifted Stephen Hill a goal, but he was unable to convert, letting the Power off the hook, with scores level at quarter time.

Quarter time

Fremantle 2.8 (20)

Goals:Butcher, P. Stewart, Broadbent
Possessions: McCarthy 8, Boak, Cassisi 6, Chaplin, Cornes, Ebert 5

Second quarter

Aaron Sandilands was dominating the hitouts, but the Power’s Brent Renouf competed well to quell the advantage of those hitouts.

Following a spell of pressure inside the Power’s forward 50m, the Dockers got some relief thanks to a 50m penalty and when Matthew Pavlich received a free kick for a slap on the arms, the resulting kick gave the home side the lead for the first time.

Several skill errors proved costly in the second quarter for the visitors, as the hosts continued with the momentum they had at the end of the first period.

Paul Stewart’s poor kick in the defensive 50 led to a very tough holding the ball decision against the skipper. Clancee Pearce converted for the Dockers to open up a three goal lead.

The Power struggled to transition from defence as the Dockers turned the screws, with Pavlich kicking another to open up a 24-point lead.

A nice bit of play through the midfield led to a shot on goal from a tight angle to Broadbent, who hit the post.

The Power couldn’t create enough opportunities inside 50 and the Dockers led the inside 50 count 26-18.

Third Quarter

The Power looked to take the game on in the third quarter and were rewarded early with a goal to Westhoff from a tight angle in the forward pocket.

But a strong mark to De Boer 25m out straight in front for the Dockers and the resulting goal steadied the home side.

The visitors continued to struggle to transition from defence and this proved costly, with Fremantle’s zone holding strong to cause multiple turnovers.

It was a midfield struggle for much of the third quarter but it was Port Adelaide who eventually broke free to kick their fifth of the day through Brad Ebert.

But again the Dockers responded from a turnover, this time through Chris Mayne, who kicked his 11th straight for the year to restore a 26-point lead.

The sub was activated late in the third term with Brett Ebert coming into the game for Daniel Stewart and when Butcher kicked his second, the lead was cut back to just 20 points, with the Power to come home with the wind.

Despite some opportunities late in the quarter for the Dockers, the Power were still within reach at the final break.

Fourth Quarter

The first goal of the final quarter was vital and after some midfield pinball, the Dockers struck first, through the tallest man in the AFL - Aaron Sandilands - who goaled after a strong grab 25m out directly in front.

The Power looked to respond through the middle of the ground, but another missed handball target turned the ball over and led to a goal for the Dockers.

A scrappy final quarter led to few scoring opportunities, but the Dockers made the most of theirs, this time through Mayne.

A moment of brilliance from Broadbent - as he snapped from the boundary line - was cancelled out quickly by Pavlich’s 500th career goal.

Despite being in the game for most of the day, the scoreboard ultimately flattered the Power.
