THERE were plenty of positives for the Power during Round 6 SANFL action with the return to form of young tough nut Mitch Farmer and the return from injury of the Power’s 2008 second round draft pick Jackson Trengove. But it was a veteran who stole the show, with Josh Carr’s return to the Bays marked by a vintage performance and the Cibo Glenelg SANFL Power Player of the Week Award.

Carr was at his in and under best at Noarlunga, dominating the clearances and racking up possessions at will in Glenelg’s 26 point win over the Panthers.

The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.

Carr’s Glenelg and Power teammate Danny Meyer had another good game across half back, as did Marlon Motlop, Paul Stewart and Matthew Broadbent, who are all waiting for the chance to step up to the Power side. With 15 Power players in action at the weekend, it was a busy weekend for Trevena and Cochrane, who travelled all over Adelaide to follow the progress of our players. The full wrap is below.

Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Josh Carr (for Glenelg v South @ Noarlunga)Played for the Bays for the first time in a long time and had 35 possessions playing on ball and up forward. Was his usual pesky self around stoppages, winning six clearances and putting the ball inside 50 seven times. A great game from Josh who really showed what he can do around the packs.

Danny Meyer (for Glenelg v South @ Noarlunga)Danny again played down back finishing with 19 possessions and a couple of very good marks overhead. We were really impressed with his aerial efforts and he looked good rebounding from defence.

Jonathon Giles (for Central v Norwood @ the Parade)Giles played in the ruck against a couple of strong opponents and showed some very good signs, proving that he’s built up his strength and is able to match it with the bigger bodies. He had 14 hitouts and was active around the ground.

Matthew Westhoff (for Central v Norwood @ the Parade)Came off the bench and played up forward, gathering 12 possessions and taking 5 marks. We’re pleased with the way he’s playing but we probably just want him to work a bit harder around the ground and get to a few more marking contests.

Nick Lower (for Norwood v Central @ the Parade)Another great effort from Nick with 26 touches, 5 marks and a massive 11 tackles. It was a very typical, tough game from Nick – what we’ve come to expect.

Paul Stewart (for Eagles v North @ Prospect)Stewie had 25 touches and a lot of link up work from half back. Apart from a short stint on Damon White – who kicked a couple on him – he gave his opponent nothing. He continues to raise the bar with the standard he’s setting and consistently keeps his opponent quiet.

Matthew Broadbent (for Eagles v North @ Prospect)Broady had a busy day with 30 possessions playing half back and on ball. He’s been very consistent rebounding from defence, but also manages to keep his opponent very quiet, which he did again on the weekend. He’s improving his form at stoppages each week and should take a lot of confidence from the way he’s playing.

Marlon Motlop (for North v Eagles @ Prospect)Played half back and used the ball very well with his 21 possessions. He’s starting to look very comfortable and confident at SANFL level and he’s now in the better players each week for North.

Daniel Stewart (for North v Eagles @ Prospect)Played in the ruck and up forward. He started really well up forward and was arguably the most dangerous forward on the ground taking a couple of good marks and kicking two goals. The second half was a bit quieter for Stewie as the Eagles got on top.

Wade Thompson (for North v Eagles @ Prospect)A quiet day for Wade with 6 possessions. Came into the play late in the game and still showed some electrifying pace at times.

Toby Thurstans (for Sturt v Port @ Alberton)Toby started down back on Maric and after conceding a goal early worked his way into the game, keeping Maric quiet and rebounding from the back line. Only ended up playing a half because of a niggling injury, but still managed 6 kicks, 3 marks and 5 handballs.

Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v North reserves @ Prospect)Glenn had a good day with 10 possessions and 3 goals, playing out of the goal square. He took a couple of very good grabs and looked lightning quick at times, but unfortunately with the good form of the Eagles’ seniors, he’s going to struggle to crack the league side. If he can keep kicking goals and improving his defensive pressure, we’re sure the call up will come eventually.

Jackson Trengove (for Port reserves v Sturt reserves @ Alberton)Jacko played his first game back after eight months out with injury. As planned, he only played a half and got through unscathed playing both forward and back. He certainly needed the run after such a long lay off and he did a couple of nice things – taking a strong mark in his first contest and laying a few tackles. We don’t have any expectations for Jackson at the moment and we’ll slowly build up his game time over the next month or so.

Matthew Lobbe (for Port reserves v Sturt reserves @ Alberton)Matty played a bit of everywhere – forward, back and ruck. He didn’t have a big game stats wise, but playing a number of different positions means he’s really improving a variety of aspects of his game.

Mitch Farmer (for Sturt reserves v Port reserves @ Alberton)Mitch’s best game for the year and it really started to look like the Farmer that we saw last year. Played in the middle and up forward, he ran hard, chased hard and looked lively. He finished with 14 kicks, 7 marks, 5 handballs and 2 goals. That’s the standard we expect of him and we’ve done a bit of extra work with him in showing him how he played last year and the things he needed to change to turn his form around. It’s pleasing to see him implement those things and if he can keep up that sort of form he’ll be back in the league side sooner rather than later.
