Ryan Burton and Tom Jonas celebrate after the final siren of Port Adelaide's Qualifying Final win over Geelong.

PORT ADELAIDE captain Tom Jonas admits he has not quite worked out what he will say before Friday night’s Preliminary Final to fire up his side but says it should not matter given what’s at stake.

Jonas and his Port side will take on Richmond in front of a sold-out Adelaide Oval crowd for a place in the AFL Grand Final.

Off the back of a week off, Port is rested and Jonas said his team would need to ensure it comes out firing to avoid any sluggishness off the break.

He said he would need to come up with something to say to the group before the first bounce.

“I’m trying to (prepare) now because I’ve run out of content,” Jonas said at a press conference on Monday.

“I feel like boys don’t need much to fire them up at this time of year but I’ll try and come up with something that hopefully gets them going.

“Even if it’s a bit of a dogs’ breakfast, the boys take as much pleasure out of that as anything.

Jonas conceded there needed to be a combination of emotion and reiterating team planning in the talk, but the 29-year-old said that did not make it any easier to come up with something to say.

“It gets tough when you’re 19 or 20 games into the year,” he joked.

“I threw it to Hartsy (Hamish Hartlett) the other week and that got the monkey off my back a little bit.

“But we won’t need much of a pump up this weekend. When you’re going to be in front of a home crowd with an opportunity to play in the Grand Final, it shouldn’t matter”

It was revealed on Monday afternoon that the entire allocation of just over 25,000 tickets had been sold for Friday night’s game.

Jonas said having such vocal support has been important to the side in the unusual season that 2020 has become and it meant a lot to the entire club.

“They’re part of the fabric of Port Adelaide,” the skipper said of the members and supporters.

“It’s a community club and in those particular moments, it’s just nice to know you’ve got 25,000 people out there behind you and supporting you.

“Whether it’s a decision you think was maybe a bit stiff from the umpires and they’re getting into them and doing the hard work for you or when something goes really well and they create that extra bit of energy for you.”

Friday night’s Preliminary Final between Port Adelaide and Richmond gets underway at Adelaide Oval from 7:20pm ACDST.
