Ollie Wines has been able to attack his pre-season training with a healthy body after a surgery-free off-season.

PORT ADELAIDE vice-captain Ollie Wines is eyeing off a big 2021 and has named three teammates he thinks can go up a level with him, including a developing big man.

The midfielder was instrumental in his side’s run to the Preliminary Final after an almost injury-free season last year.

The 26-year-old averaged 22 disposals and five clearances in shortened games, bouncing back from two shoulder reconstructions in the space of 12 months.

With a full pre-season under his belt and no off-season surgery, Wines is fit and aiming for an even bigger season in 2021.

“I want to continue that form that I finished with last year,” he told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“I had interrupted pre-seasons the last two years and this year’s it’s been really good to do everything, have no surgery and be really healthy.

“I’ve just got to take that form into Round 1 and keep it going through the season and hopefully produce a full season of it.”

Port sat top of the ladder for the entirety of last season but fell short of making the Grand Final with the six-point loss to Richmond in the Prelim.

The disappointment of that night continues to fuel Wines and his teammates as they set their sights on atoning this year.

“We’re hungry as ever,” Wines said.

“I think you get to a game like that and you get so close but you realise how far away you are from getting that ultimate goal.

“We haven’t rested on our laurels. We haven’t just expected to do the same as we did last year. We’ve come in, we’ve worked really hard and we’re hungry as ever.

“We want to go a couple better. We want to win the flag and we think 2021 is a massive opportunity to do that.”

And Wines has picked draftee Lachie Jones, ruckman Peter Ladhams and young gun Zak Butters as three players set to help the side improve.

“Lachie Jones is a ready-made footballer. He’s built like he belongs out there already and I daresay he’ll feature pretty early in the season,” Wines explained.

“Another guy who has come on in leaps and bounds is Peter Ladhams. He’s challenging (Charlie Dixon) for most contested marks in the pre-season. He’s been a really big presence out there so I think he’ll take a really big step this year.

“The other one is Zak Butters. He’s playing a lot more in the midfield now and he’s darting around out there. He’s has a really big impact as a midfielder and I think he’ll see a lot more time up the ground this year.”

Ollie Wines says Peter Ladhams is rivalling Charlie Dixon as the contested marking king at Alberton this pre-season.

Port Adelaide is well placed to tackle a practice game against Adelaide next week and a pre-season AAMI Community Series game against West Coast the week after with a fully fit list to choose from and plenty of competition for places.

The club is also well placed off the field with three joint major partners for the first time and a new partnership with electricity and gas retailer AGL Energy announced on Thursday, which will be beneficial for members.

“It’s huge news for us with AGL joining on – another national brand joining on – with the likes of KFC, MG and GFG so it’s a huge day for our club,” Wines said.

“They’re going to be powering Port Adelaide on for the near future.

“All our members and supporters, keep an eye out, they’ll be giving us an opportunity for commercial and residential discounts so they’ll be on board for helping us out as a club and they’ll give back to the members.”
