PORT Adelaide defender Jackson Trengove says the club's new defence-first approach will be on show in the NAB Cup opener against Adelaide and Melbourne at AAMI Stadium on Friday night.

The Power addressed a need by improving their contested-possession count last season but leaked defensively, ranking sixth in the AFL for scores against.

New coach Matthew Primus' primary focus over the pre-season has been to add a greater defensive edge to his team and Trengove said he expected other clubs to have followed suit on the back of Collingwood's premiership success.

"The defensive-side of things is going to go up another level this season because Collingwood stepped it up last year and got a flag," Trengove said on Thursday.

"All the other clubs out there look at that and will have to step their game up, in terms of the defensive aspect. We've put a fair bit of emphasis this pre-season into that. Hopefully, that reflects in the NAB Cup game on Friday night."

Trengove also predicted fast-paced games on Friday night, courtesy of the experimental last touch out of bounds rule.

Under the rule, the last player to touch the ball before it goes over the boundary line will be penalised with a free kick against.

Trengove said the new rule could result in some basketball-style tactics, with players likely to try and deflect the ball off the legs of their opponents and over the boundary line in a bid to earn a free kick.

"The game is going to be a lot quicker," he said.

"For a big man like me I don’t think it's going to make much difference. We're pretty slow, so we'll be lumbering around and doing our thing, but it's going to be exciting for the midfielders and forwards to get a bit more speed in the game."

The Power have named a 35-man squad for the AAMI-Stadium triple header, but that will be trimmed to 29 on Friday afternoon.

Primus has already indicated ruckman Dean Brogan, who has been named in the squad, will be rested, while rookie-listed tall Daniel Bass is in doubt with a hamstring complaint.
