Bob Quinn is chaired from the ground after Port Adelaide's win over West Torrens in the 1939 Grand Final, he would soon after deploy for the war and show his bravery on the field of battle.

THE story of Bob Quinn is legendary.

Quinn would lead Port Adelaide to a premiership in 1939 as captain-coach and only 12 months earlier had won his first Magarey Medal.

In 1940, Quinn enlisted for the Australian Army, and on August 3, 1941 he took command of the 10th platoon in the Siege of Tobruk for which he would receive the Military Medal for bravery.

Despite the prognosis he would never play football again after receiving deep shrapnel wounds, Quinn returned to Port Adelaide and in 1945, claimed his second Magarey Medal.

The player awarded best on ground in this weekend's Port Adelaide, Glenelg clash will receive the honour of the Bob Quinn Medal.

This weekend, Port Adelaide will face Glenelg with the best on ground receiving the honour of the Bob Quinn Medal in his honour.

The two sides will be playing a rematch of the 2019 Grand Final after being unable to face each other in 2020 due to AFL COVID protocols.

Quinn's son, Greg, reflected on what the ANZAC weekend means for their family.

“Well, it's fantastic honour,” he said. We fully understand what ANZAC means. And I think because we've been touched with my dad's record and things like that, it becomes quite a special day and a special time of the year.

“We owe it to the people that have served to show them the respect, and it just so happens that my dad has a story that's told and just about every ANZAC and we fully understand that dad's not the only bloke that's been involved.

“Respect comes from the story that is my dad, and also the other people that have served our country so much, with all the wars and the servicemen have gone before.

“It's a fantastic day, and we just we just love having the opportunity to show respect, not only to my dad, but to the other people that have served Australia, so well.”

Greg Quinn also reflected on those who didn’t make it back from that Siege of Tobruk.

“It comes around, just about every year and we're proud and we understand what dad went through that particular day when he was awarded the Military Medal,” he said.

“But there were also so many other boys in his squadron that didn't come back, I think there was 38 that went out that particular day, and seven of them got back.

“That's the sort of thing that, we were thankful that dad got back, but we also feel to the other 30 or 20 other boys that sort of didn't make it.

“Yeah, it's wonderful that we get to reminisce about dad, but we also can't forget those other boys that that were lost on that particular effort to try and push through that barbed wire that night and day in Tobruk.

“We're very thankful that they got through, but there's so many other stories that need to be told of that night.

“To be to be awarded that medal was wonderful, and it's a fantastic achievement for Dad but there was a lot of other things that happen in that particular effort.”

The Port Adelaide Football Club means a lot to the Quinn family, and Greg Quinn was thankful for its part in his family’s history.

“It means a great deal to our family. Dad comes from a family of 10 and five boys and five girls and one of his brothers fell out of a tree at the age of 13 and got gangrene and died but the other four boys all played for Port Adelaide,” he said.

“Including my grandfather, Pop Quinn was a champion best and fairest and a leading goal kicker and a Port Adelaide captain and the four other boys all played at Port, so it stretches back a long way.

“Again, we're really proud not only my dad's efforts, but his three other brothers and his father, you know, we're blessed to be able to look back on that and see the wonderful history that the Port Adelaide Football Club gave my family an opportunity to show you how good they were.

“My son and myself get to Alberton when we can during the footy season.”
