You are invited to a big city breakfast with a difference - you won’t actually be fed, but you’ll be going hungry for a great cause!

No Breakfast Friday is a unique fund-raiser for Foodbank through its Power to End Hunger partnership with the Port Adelaide Football Club.

It’s on Friday 31 August 2012 at the Adelaide Convention Centre, with tickets costing $50 and proceeds supporting Foodbank and its work to supply 600 charities and organisations which help to feed the hungry.

While you won’t be fed, we’ll fill you with inspiration through outstanding guest speakers in acclaimed television presenter Mike Munro and South Australia’s remarkable Lieutenant Governor Hieu Van Le.

It’ll be a great way to start your day. The only thing missing is breakfast -there’ll be no eggs and bacon, no toast and not even a bowl of cereal!

That’s because Foodbank and the Port Adelaide Football Club want you to experience - for one morning at least - what it’s like to go without food.

Hunger is a constant reality for too many South Australians - including at least 5000 children who go to school without breakfast. The impact on those students is enormous, draining them of nutrition and energy, and severely inhibiting their ability to learn.

Foodbank chief executive officer Richard Pagliaro said No Breakfast Friday will be an opportunity for South Australians to better understand the increasing issue of hunger and the solution the organisation provides.

“Being hungry and not knowing where your next meal is coming from is a very disturbing experience and sadly it’s one that too many people have to endure,” Mr Pagliaro said.

“Through No Breakfast Friday we want people who can’t imagine what that’s like to experience going without a meal and in doing so get them to really think about what less fortunate people live with every day of their lives.

“And in paying for the privilege of being involved in the cause, they will also be helping Foodbank to help the ever increasing number of people in need.”

Port Adelaide Football Club chief executive officer Keith Thomas said No Breakfast Friday has the potential to grow into a wider community event as the Power to End Hunger partnership builds.

“We are launching No Breakfast Friday as a corporate event to introduce it as a unique and educational fundraiser,” Mr Thomas said.

“But we believe in the years ahead it could become a wider community-based campaign that people will be able to adopt in their homes and workplaces and among friends.

“We think it’s a fantastic way to expose people to the issue of hunger in our society and at the same time raise money to do something very meaningful to tackle it and make a difference.”

The Adelaide Convention Centre is a long-term supporter of Foodbank and has generously supplied its venue and services for No Breakfast Friday.

A journalist with decades of experience chasing news around the globe, Mike Munro leads the line-up of speakers at the event. He will tell his own remarkable story, revealing his rise from an underprivileged childhood to a national media career.

Lieutenant Governor Hieu Van Le came to Australia by boat amid the earliest arrival of refugees from Vietnam, attaining an economics degree from Adelaide University and a career with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. His ongoing tireless commitment to the multicultural and wider community saw him appointed to the role of Lieutenant Governor in 2007.

Rosanna Mangiarelli - host of Channel 7’s Today Tonight - will serve as master of ceremonies.

One table will be the envy of the room, with a celebrity chef cooking up a breakfast to be auctioned on the morning.

So book now or arrange a table of 10 from your workplace to join No Breakfast Friday and go hungry for a cause.
