RETIRED Port Adelaide star and current Power Community Ltd Multicultural Programs Manager, Alipate Carlile has been recognised for his work in the community with a nomination as a Westfield Local Hero.

Each year, Westfield, through their community recognition and grants program, shine a light on community members who connect and enrich their local community, with a chance at winning a $10,000 grant for their affiliated organisation.

The man affectionately known as Bobby has been nominated for his outstanding work promoting wellbeing, inclusion and harmony to many young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds across South Australia.

He does this through his key role in implementing the Power Intercultural Program, which uses AFL and the Port Adelaide Football Club as catalysts for social connection and acceptance.

This year’s program culminated in a football carnival at Karen Rolton Oval, which boasted record numbers of participants in 2019. In its third year, participation in the program rose 25 per cent, with 242 students from 11 schools taking part in the program that engaged more than 200 ethnic groups.

“The aim is to create a welcoming environment that is willing and able to work with the young people to help them achieve their individual goals,” says Alipate.

If Alipate is voted as one of the three successful finalists to received the $10,000 grant, Power Community Ltd will be able to extend the Power Intercultural Program to be delivered to four additional schools, further benefiting up to 80 students and four teachers.
