DEFENDER Trent McKenzie has agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension at Port Adelaide, extending his time at Alberton into a seventh season.

Since making his way to Port Adelaide as a delisted free agent in 2017, McKenzie has made a position in the backline his own, adding 57 AFL games to the 106 he played with Gold Coast as part of the Suns’ inaugural list.

The 31-year-old has formed a strong partnership with fellow backman Aliir Aliir in 2023, often playing taller than his 191cm frame to contain key forwards.

While he is currently working his way back from a knee injury suffered against Geelong last weekend, McKenzie is excited to continue his time with the club.

“I’m stoked to be honest. Another year, another opportunity with a great group,” McKenzie said.

“We are a young group but we’ve got some good older heads and we’re one big family that I love being part of.

“I’m excited to stay around the group and lead the way where I can.”

Renowned for his booming left foot, McKenzie has proven to be a reliable defensive option.

List Manager Jason Cripps said McKenzie had become an important part of the club’s backline.

“Trent is a highly valued member of our team due to his unique ability to compete and negate forwards above his size,” Cripps said.

“His experience has been important when surrounded by some of our younger defenders this season, and his relaxed nature and sense of humour makes him a popular teammate.”

McKenzie’s re-signing follows the recontracting of Miles Bergman and Jed McEntee in recent weeks.
