Port Adelaide forward Gemma Houghton has etched her name in AFLW history, becoming the first player to reach a milestone 100 career goals.
The achievement came in dramatic fashion during a dominant 57-point victory against the GIANTS to close out the home-and-away season at Henson Park on Saturday afternoon.
Houghton booted her fourth goal after the final siren, pulling down a contested mark with only two seconds remaining.
Reflecting on the historic moment, Houghton said she couldn’t script it better.
“I knew there was about a minute to go and I’d had plenty of shots and plenty of moments. I kind of just thought, 'Yep, not meant to be, I'll sit on 99’," Houghton said.
“We obviously got the ball to ‘Juzzy’ (captain Justine Mules-Robinson). She didn't hit my first lead, which is probably good because I feel like sometimes when you're rushed, they're the ones that you miss. I saw her waiting, went again and got the mark. I couldn't script it better.
“I felt a little bit calm and composed lining up for the shot. Once it had left my boot there was nothing I could do. I looked up, it went straight through the middle and then the girls… just a flood of teal came towards me. That was so special, one I'll remember forever.
“I said to the coaches ‘don't take me off, I’m staying on’…it was meant to be, I guess.”
“I didn't want to take too much of the glory away from Ash’s (Woodland) 75th as well. For us to get the win away from home and throwing a pile on the scoreboard to end our home and away season, I couldn’t be prouder of the girls.”
The 86-game* forward joined Port Adelaide from Fremantle as part of its inaugural side in 2022, and finished the home-and-away season with an impressive haul of 23 goals, just one behind current league-leader and teammate Indy Tahau (25 goals).
