Port Adelaide is pleased to announce the appointment of Glenn Strachan as senior coach of the club’s AFLW program.

Strachan joins Port Adelaide after five years with the Carlton Football Club, most recently serving as senior assistant coach of the AFLW program under senior coach Mathew Buck, a role he has held for the past three seasons.

During his time at Carlton, Strachan also served as a VFL development coach under AFL assistant coach Luke Power.

In 2024, he stepped into the role of VFLW senior coach, where he worked to strengthen alignment between the club’s VFLW and AFLW programs and build strong relationships between players and staff.

A familiar figure in elite football environments, Strachan also spent several seasons playing in the VFL system, including time as vice-captain with Carlton, Collingwood Football Club and more recently the Northern Bullants.

Holding a degree in Applied Science (Physical Education), Strachan has also worked in education outside of football, including roles as Head of Sport and in learning support, where he built a reputation as a highly organised educator who forms strong relationships with students, players and colleagues.

Port Adelaide’s Head of AFLW Dan Merrett said Strachan’s leadership, football knowledge and broad skillset made him an outstanding appointment for the club’s AFLW program.

“Glenn is a highly respected coach with a strong football IQ and a genuine passion for helping players improve and develop,” Merrett said.

“He has built a reputation for clearly communicating feedback and helping players implement improvements in their game, which will be a great asset to our young group.

“His experience as both an athlete and coach across elite football environments and player development pathways, coupled with his teaching background, means he is very well placed to lead our program and continue driving standards on and off the field.”

Strachan, who welcomed his first child with wife Connor this week, said his experience across multiple coaching roles had shaped the values he brings to leading a program.

“It’s a privilege to be appointed senior coach of Port Adelaide’s AFLW team,” Strachan said.

“This is a club with a proud history and passionate supporter base, and I’m looking forward to working with the playing group and staff to build on the strong foundations already in place.

“We have a very talented list, and I’ve watched how much the group has developed individually and collectively over the past few years. I’m excited by the opportunity to work with them as we head into the season.

“Working across VFLW and AFLW programs has taught me the value of preparation, integrity and hard work, and they are principles I will bring to the role.

“I’m passionate about creating a high-performing environment where players can thrive and achieve both team and individual success.
