PORT ADELAIDE was outclassed by a rampant North Adelaide outfit going down by 57 points at a cold and wet Prospect Oval today.
Wearing the club's First Nations guernsey, designed by former Port Adelaide player Uncle Mickey O'Brien, as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, the Magpies controlled territory earlier but could not sustain it across four quarters, losing 13.11 (89) to 4.8 (32).
North Adelaide big man Mitch Harvey opened the scoring with a superb set shot from 45 metres, and despite Xavier Walsh replying for Port Adelaide soon after, the Roosters kicked the next two goals of the term to lead by 13 points at the first change.
The Magpies started the second quarter with intent, registering the first three scoring shots, but couldn't convert, managing only behinds before Kye Roberts finally broke through 23 minutes into the quarter. North Adelaide hit back immediately through Lachlan Wilsdon to extend their lead to 14 points at half-time.
Jake Tarca gave Port Adelaide a lift early in the third term with a soccered goal, but tempers flared soon after and the Roosters took control, with Reed Van Huisstede and a third for Kalan Caputo blowing the margin out to 20 points. Frank Szekely and a second from Harvey stretched the lead further, before Tom Anastasopoulos snuck one back for the Magpies to leave North Adelaide 26 points clear at the last change.
The final quarter belonged entirely to the Roosters, who kicked 5.2 to 0.1 with their defence proving impenetrable, helping seal the convincing win.
Port Adelaide coach Jacob Surjan praised his side's efforts in the first half but was frank about where the game was lost.
“We were really in the contest in that first half and I thought some of our defensive and offensive work was good,” Surjan said.
“But in the second half our ability to keep challenging and keep defending as a team was disappointing, especially in the last quarter when we just couldn't execute anything we were trying to do. Some of North Adelaide's mature players really stepped up whilst our players didn't.”
Jack Watkins was best afield for the Magpies with 25 disposals, eight clearances and three tackles, while Will Lorenz (25 disposals) and Rome Burgoyne (21 disposals) were also among Port Adelaide's best.
Port Adelaide will look to bounce back when they host Woodville-West Torrens next Saturday night under lights at Alberton Oval from 7.10pm.
