PORT Adelaide coach Mark Williams is fighting fire with fire in the lead-up to Sunday's twilight clash with Collingwood at the MCG.

His coaching counterpart Mick Malthouse has a habit of making last-minute changes and keeping opposition sides guessing as to the make-up of the Pies' final 22.

On Friday, Williams admitted there was some doubt over the availability of a few of his own players, including forwards Daniel Motlop and Robbie Gray.

"Not too many of the guys trained on Wednesday, so we had to see if they could go absolutely flat out. In the training session, it's not quite flat out," Williams said on Friday.

"I can't actually tell you if they [Motlop and Gray] are playing or not because I haven't spoken to the doctors or physios, but from what I saw out there I reckon they'll play."

Defender Troy Chaplin, who experienced groin soreness after the loss to the Swans, completed Friday's session and is expected to play.

Williams conceded there was a limit to how many underdone players the club could punt on against the Pies this week.

"We're playing Sunday and Sunday night, almost, so it's a few days away," he said.

"I guarantee you that no club goes in to a game with every player 100 per cent fit. Everyone takes those sorts of little chances.

"Two weeks ago – when Tredders kicked seven goals – he came off the ground after the first warm up and the doctors said 'I don't think Tredders will play, get Marlon ready', and then he came out and kicked seven."

Veteran Josh Carr was the only omission from the side that lost to the Swans by 55 points last week.

Williams admitted that Carr wasn't the worst player in the team last week, but suggested the former Fremantle vice-captain would need to spend a fortnight in the SANFL before being considered for a recall.

Williams said it was difficult to swing the axe at the selection table with so many players displaying patchy form.

"When you track the consistency of different players, you'll note that after one or two bad weeks they've played pretty good. The side plays well and everything keeps moving along, so it's difficult to rule a line through anyone especially," he said.

"Unfortunately, we can't get everyone up at the same time and that's what we're looking to do."
Collingwood has recalled match winners Dale Thomas and Alan Didak to the side that toppled West Coast last week and Williams said he expected another big-name inclusion.

"Thomas and Didak are very good players and I wouldn't be surprised if Paul Medhurst pops in as well. You never know with Mick."

The Power will travel to Melbourne on Saturday and, despite the significant swine flu outbreak across the border, will not follow St Kilda's lead and take any extra precautions on the flight.
