Stephen 'Bomber' Clifford was loved equally for his play on the field as his personality off it.

IN the next instalment of MG Moments, former Port Adelaide champion Stephen Clifford recounts a mischievous exchange with media personality Ken ‘KG’ Cunningham.

Known equally for his cheek as his bravery on the field at Alberton, the man affectionately known as Bomber didn’t shy away from a smart-aleck response when quizzed about Port’s recruiting for next season by Cunningham.

“Ken said, ‘What’s happening with players next year?’ Clifford recalled.

“I just said, ‘We’ve recruited Royce Hart’s brother.’”

Royce Hart was a champion Richmond player during the ‘60s and ‘70s and Clifford supported the Tigers growing up in Melbourne. So the ruse got off to a believable start.

“Ken said, ‘What was his name?’” Clifford elaborated.

“I said, ‘Duef’

“He said, ‘Duef Hart?’

“I said, ‘No, did you?’

“It took Ken a little bit of time to know what I meant, but once he got a hold of me it was good.”

After crossing over from Collingwood in the late ‘70s Clifford settled in as a mainstay in Port Adelaide’s side, claiming three premierships and three best and fairests.
