Greg Phillips holds the Thomas Seymour Hill trophy aloft after yet another premiership triumph with Port Adelaide in 1990 (his seventh of eight).

The Port Adelaide Football Club congratulates eight-time SANFL premiership hero Greg Phillips on becoming the club’s 13th inductee into the Australian Football Hall of Fame tonight.

Port Adelaide chairman David Koch lauded Phillips for an incredible career that was destined to be recognised in the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

“The club has rightly been pushing for Greg to be elevated into this esteemed group for several years and we are grateful that the Hall of Fame committee has seen fit to induct him this year, in our 150th anniversary,” Mr Koch said.

“Greg and his family so richly deserve this honour. Greg was not only giant in stature but a giant of our football club, and the game.

“He represented our famous black-and-white Prison Bar guernsey in a remarkable 343 games across two stints, winning an incredible eight premierships and captaining one of those flags.

“Greg also represented Collingwood in the VFL and South Australia in 20 State games.

“Despite his astonishing record of success Greg is one of the most humble people you’ll meet, very reluctant to talk about himself or his achievements.

“For Greg it was always about Port Adelaide and ultimate team success and that is why he is so fondly remembered as one of Port Adelaide’s favourite sons.

“We thank Greg for his contribution to not only our club, but to football in general.

“This is the exclamation mark that caps off a career he and has family should be forever proud of.”

After being recruited from Port Adelaide’s country zone on the Eyre Peninsula, Phillips debuted for Port Adelaide in 1976 and was a member of Port Adelaide’s 1977 premiership team.

Aside from his eight premierships, Phillips was All-Australian in 1980 and a Port Adelaide best-and-fairest winner in the club’s premiership year of 1988.

Phillips is placed at centre-half-back in Port Adelaide’s Greatest Team and was an inaugural inductee in the South Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
