PORT ADELAIDE defender Jacob Surjan admits his side has let out-of-contract coach Mark Williams down with its roller-coaster start to the season.

The Power led by six points at half time against Collingwood on Sunday afternoon, but were outscored 11 goals to four in the second half.

Last week, it was a sluggish start that cost Port Adelaide a chance of victory against the Swans.

The Port Adelaide players have voiced their support for Williams in recent weeks, but Surjan said it was time the group translated that talk into much-needed wins on the board.

“The coaches did everything possible to win the game. We really feel for 'Choco' [Williams] and the coaching staff because we prepare so hard throughout the week to come up with plans to win the game,” Surjan said.

“We’re really upset with how that third quarter went on Sunday. We respect and love our coach so much, and it’s definitely draining the playing group because we’re letting him and the other coaches down.”

The Pies slammed on nine unanswered goals in the third quarter to set-up the 38-point win.

Surjan said the Power had attempted to stem the bleeding after the first three Collingwood goals.

“We tried to slow the game down, but Collingwood was getting so much of the ball from the stoppages and, unfortunately, we couldn’t get our hands on it to actually be able to slow the game down.”

The loss sees Port Adelaide slip out of the top eight to 10th on the AFL ladder.

Surjan said the Power were still a “big chance” to play finals, despite their indifferent start.

“It’s a tight year. I think there are seven teams on 5-5 at the moment, and I don’t think it’s ever been like that before in the history of the AFL,” he said.

“We’re still in the hunt and every week is going to be a dogfight for us to make the finals.”

Port Adelaide will now prepare to take on Fremantle at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.

The Power are hopeful lively forward Daniel Motlop will be available for selection after pulling out of the side with an ankle injury prior to Sunday’s loss to Collingwood.

However, utility Chad Cornes is likely to miss at least a week. Cornes spent much of the second half icing sore spots on his calf and knee and will be assessed on Monday.
