Rnd 10 SANFL wrap-up
A 53 hitout game from Jonathon Giles has earned him the Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week Award for Round 10.
Giles, who was dropped to the reserves because the Dogs deciding against three league ruckmen, was allowed to ruck the entire game, dominating throughout losing only six ruck contests. The development coaches were also impressed with the big man’s positioning around the ground, with increased game time allowing him to develop that side of his game.
The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
Nick Salter returned from injury with an impressive display in the reserves, Mitch Banner racked up plenty of the ball for the Eagles and Jackson Trengove was in the best for the Magpies taking some courageous marks. The full wrap is below.
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Jonathon Giles (for Central reserves v Sturt reserves @ Unley) – Joffa was forced back to the reserves because Mackenzie and Griffin are holding down the league ruck spots. It actually allowed him to get a lot more time on ground and develop a few different aspects of his game. He dominated the ruck winning 53 out of 59 hitouts rucking the whole game and moved nicely around the ground for the entire game. Some great signs for him.
Matthew Broadbent (for Eagles v Norwood @ Woodville) – Broady played on the ball and down back and although it wasn’t his best game for the year, he still managed to have an impact. Finished with 13 kicks, 5 marks and 5 handballs and again did some really hard running – you know he’s never going to give up on a chase and tackle effort.
Mitch Banner (for Eagles v Norwood @ Woodville) – A good game from Mitch with 13 kicks, 12 handballs, 7 marks and a lot of good centre square work. He reads the ball off the tap well and gets other people involved in the play from his stoppage possessions. He’ll continue to work on his fitness base but it was a very good game considering it was only his second league start.
Paul Stewart (for Eagles v Norwood @ Woodville) – Stewie had a good first three quarters matched up on Luke Jericho, keeping him goalless. Unfortunately in the last quarter, because the Eagles faded and applied very little pressure to the ball carrier, he had four goals kicked on him. He had 11 kicks, 6 handballs and 7 marks.
Daniel Stewart (for North v West @ Richmond) – Struggled to get into the game because he had very limited time on ground. He played just over one quarter because North has so many tall options up forward. Still managed to kick a goal and competed well when he was in the ruck.
Jesse Laurie (for West v North @ Richmond) – Jesse had his second game of league footy playing down back against North. Did a great job defensively, not conceding a goal and got a bit of the ball with 14 possessions. He just needs to keep working on improving his ball use when rebounding from 50.
Matthew Lobbe (for West v North @ Richmond) – Lobbe played his first league game for Westies and rucked the entire game, running out the game well considering his workload. He competed well in the ruck all day against one of the best ruckmen in the SANFL in Cain Ackland and he certainly learnt a lot from the game. His positioning around the ground was good and his second and third efforts were very encouraging. He’ll be looking to build on that solid game.
Danny Meyer (for Glenelg v Port @ the Bay) – Danny had his typical game across the half back line, racking up 22 touches, taking 8 marks and applying an impressive 7 tackles. He provided plenty of drive from half back with some good run and handball receives and put the ball inside 50 five times, including a goal.
Nathan Krakouer (for Port v Glenelg @ the Bay) – Despite being dropped from the Power side, he went back to the Magpies with a great attitude and had a good game playing half forward, wing and on the ball. Went head to head with Danny Meyer in the first quarter, and they both managed to kick a goal. Finished with 21 disposals, 7 marks and 2 goals. He looked dangerous forward, used the ball well and considering the conditions didn’t really suit him, played very well.
Jackson Trengove (for Port reserves v Glenelg reserves @ the Bay) – Another good run for Jackson playing at CHB. He was named as Port’s best and finished with 15 possessions, 9 tackles and 7 marks, including a couple of very courageous grabs running back with the flight of the ball. He was really aggressive again and had an impact when the ball was in his area, using his physical presence. His fitness is improving each week and he was able to play 95% of the game. He’ll be pressing for league selection this week.
Nick Salter (for Eagles reserves v Norwood reserves @ Woodville) – Salts played his first game back from injury and impressed with 11 kicks, 6 handballs, 3 marks and 2.1. He presented well, worked hard and had some very good highlights during the game. He’ll continue to improve on that performance as he regains his fitness base.
Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v Norwood reserves @ Woodville) – The Cougar had a reasonable game booting 2 goals from 8 touches. He needs to keep working on leading up to the ball carrier when he’s playing forward. He also moved back in the final quarter and played very physically against his opponent, holding him well.
Jarrad Redden (for Eagles reserves v Norwood reserves @ Woodville) – Reddo went into the game with the flu and struggled to have a huge impact. Didn’t have much of the ball around the ground, but dominated the ruck with 26 hitouts.
Mitch Farmer (for Sturt reserves v Central reserves @ Unley) – A reasonable game from Mitch with 16 disposals and a couple of goals playing on the ball and down back. He used his penetrating kick nicely and won a bit of his own ball with some hard ball gets.
Matthew Martin (for West reserves v North reserves @ Richmond) – Matty had 9 kicks, 5 marks, 4 handballs and 6 tackles in a reasonable game for him. His defensive pressure was good and he used the ball effectively.
Wade Thompson (for North reserves v West reserves @ Richmond) – Wade had 15 disposals and 3 goals and looked very lively at times in North’s forward line. He continues to work hard on his defensive pressure, using his pace to chase and tackle to hold the ball in the forward line.
