In his 18 games in the black and white, four would be against St Kilda, two of which were in September. He came face to face with Justin Koschitzke in the Semi Final loss in 2008.

McCarthy celebrated NAB Cup premiership success in March, 2011, when he was part of the Collingwood team that downed Essendon to claim its first pre-season flag since 1979.

In December 2011, McCarthy arrived at Alberton where he made an instant impact on teammates with his infectious, friendly personality. He described his move to Port Adelaide as a 'fresh start'

With a point to prove against his old side, McCarthy was everywhere collecting 30 possessions in the Power's 24-point loss in Round 4

J-Mac played in two Showdowns, picking up 16 possessions in each match

In perhaps his best game for Port Adelaide, J-Mac kept the Power within touching distance until three-quarter time with his impressive performance in the midfield. He had 30 disposals and received two votes in the Best & Fairest
